Major Assessments 45%
Tests: Tests are always announced with a study guide provided in advance. There will be a summative test at the end of each unit of study.
Projects: Throughout the year students will be completing a variety of projects. The projects may be assigned as independent, with a partner, or with a group. These assignments will be accompanied by a rubric.
Minor Assessments 35%
Writing/Inquiry: Throughout the year students will be writing in a variety of ways including inquiry assignments, quick writes, and constructed responses.
Quizzes: Each unit of study will begin with a unit vocabulary quiz. Study guides will be provided and students will have one week to study for the quiz.
Daily Work 20%
Classwork: Classwork may be individual or completed in a group. There are times when classwork will be finished at home.
Homework: When homework is assigned it typically will be scored on effort and completion versus “correctness”.
It is the student's responsibility to find out what was missed, get all appropriate materials on their own, and complete their assignment immediately upon return to school. They can find what was missed in several ways:
Check the classroom agenda: This is updated daily and the slides are kept for all previous days of the school year as well. It includes the daily agenda and work completion expectation as well as any due dates.
Check the blue team homework calendar.
Ask a classmate while home.
Ask me when they return.
What if scenarios:
If a student is absent the day an assignment is assigned:
one day will be added to the due date for each day missed in class.
If a student is absent the day an individual assignment is worked on (the student was in class when it was assigned)
the original date still stands
If a student is absent the day a group assignment is worked on (the student was in class when it was assigned)
one day will be added to the due date for the group that each day was missed in class
If the student is absent the day of an assessment
The student will make up the assessment or turn in the project on the day they return
If the student is absent the day a project is due
The student will turn in the project on the day they return
It is the student's responsibility to turn in make-up work by the make-up due date. If a student fails to turn in make-up work on time, points will be deducted in accordance with the late work policy.
In the case of electronic assignments, it is the student's responsibility to notify the teacher via email that the assignment was turned in. This step is crucial as I do not receive notifications that assignments are turned in. Failure to notify the teacher will result in a late penalty or a zero.
This Late Work Policy is designed to provide a fair and consistent framework for addressing late assignments and projects. I believe that punctuality and responsibility are important skills for students to develop as they prepare for higher education and their future careers. This policy outlines the guidelines and consequences for submitting late work, while also providing students with opportunities for support and improvement.
Policy Guidelines
Submission Deadline:
All assignments and projects are expected to be submitted by their respective deadlines, as communicated by the teacher.
It is the responsibility of the student to be aware of and adhere to the due dates. All electronic assignments are due by 8:00 am. Anything submitted thereafter will be considered late.
Late Work Categories:
Late work will be categorized into two groups: excused and unexcused.
Excused late work refers to situations where a student has a legitimate reason for missing the deadline, such as illness, family emergencies, or other circumstances approved by the teacher.
Students and a guardian must notify the teacher as soon as possible if the student is unable to meet a deadline for an excused reason.
Excused late work will be accepted without penalty so long as the Absence Policy is followed.
Unexcused late work refers to situations where a student fails to meet a deadline without a legitimate reason or without prior communication with the teacher.
Unexcused late work will be subject to penalties.
Penalties for Unexcused Late Work:
Late assignments will be accepted within 24 hours of the original due date and the student's grade will be deducted by 50.
After 24 hours the assignment will not be accepted, and the student will receive a grade of zero.
Make-Up Opportunities:
Students can use WIN class (period 7) to come to my room to complete make up work.
Parental Communication:
Parents or guardians can stay informed of late work issues through regular check-ins on the student's PowerSchool account.
Parental involvement is encouraged in addressing late work concerns to provide support and motivation for the student.
Electronic Submissions:
Students must communicate with the teacher via email when electronic late work has been submitted.
Exceptions
Exceptions to this policy may be granted on a case-by-case basis, with the discretion of the teacher and school administration, depending on the unique circumstances.
Each quarter is only forty-five days and those days are going to fly! To make the most of our time, it is important that any concerns are discussed between teachers and families. Please contact me if you have any concerns about your child and I am happy to set up a time to talk to you.
This year, we are using Cougar PRIDE reflection sheets in response to behavioral incidents in the classroom. If a student receives a reflection sheet, they will need to fill the sheet out and bring it home for you to sign and return to the school. This is a schoolwide initiative.
