Strategic Goals

Strategy 1

We will research, design, and support the implementation of programs that develop physical, mental, social, and emotional health in a secure and nurturing environment that develops the grit and resilience of our students.

Specific Result #1 Develop and expand on the systematic practices for mental health and behavioral support.

*Presentations on Best Practices by Dr. Dominique Smith ad area mental health providers.

*All Learning is Social and Emotional book study.

*Capacity building through local presenters including our EHA, EAP and local practicioners.

*Suicide Prevention training.

*SES Second Step Program

*Looked at data from the Known Survey to identify students that were in extracurricular activities and students that were not to gain an understanding of student connection to school through extracurriculars

*Used the Known Survey to identify students that did not feel they had a connection with a staff member at SHS or did not feel acknowledged at SHS.

    • SCIP team members talked with these students individually to help them gain a connection


Specific Result #2 Develop and implement plans to increase resiliency and grit in students through the lens of growth mindset and problem-solving.

Specific Result #3 Expand opportunities for student and staff wellness to prepare each stakeholder for emotional, physical, mental, and academic success.

*Elementary- Planned time for physical movement has been added to the school day to increase student engagement, focus, and behaviors throughout the day

    • During Tweet Time, students will have time for physical movement

    • During morning announcements, students have “Morning Movements”

Strategy 2

We will develop plans and partnerships that cultivate positive character, citizenship, and leadership for all students in a culture where all stakeholders feel valued, known and safe.

Specific Result #1 Develop and implement policies and action plans effectively promoting communication between students, school personnel, families, and the community.

*The SES website was updated to include more information about each grade level so students and parents can look into each class.

*The team had each grade level created a “What to expect in ____ grade,” for upcoming students to look at.

*Research was done to look at middle school web pages and the SMS Page on the school website was updated. This includes the following:

    • Principal’s page

    • Grade Level Team Pages

    • Activities Page (added pictures and scores)

    • Daily announcements are posted on the web page

    • SMS home page scrolling pictures are updated


Specific Result #2 Employ best practices that connect resources to build a fully engaged staff, community, and student body.

*Each classroom participated in the Junior Achievement program at SES.

*A new multimedia class was created to share information about SHS and activities going on at SHS.


Specific Result #3 Leverage strategic partnerships in order to create and maximize resources to meet our mission and objectives.

*Revision Grant Recipient

*Community engagement meeting January 2020

*A partnership was created between SPS, Concordia, and a local farmer to provide a Farm Lab for future school years.

*The ReVISION grant cycle was completed and projects were identified for funding from ReVision.


Specific Result #4 Provide safe and secure facilities and programs that support ever-changing security standards.

*All staff were trained by ALICE certified trainers.

*Doors were replaced at the High School with internal lock systems.

*Cameras were updated.

*External doors were updated with a card reader system.

Strategy 3

We will extend our implementation of consistent district-wide processes for instructional decisions.

Specific Result #1 Expand the use of Seward Instructional Model, in collaboration with the evaluation model, to meet the needs of all students.

*Created a course for all new teachers regarding the Seward Instructional Model.

Specific Result #2 Provide relevant technology resources, along with quality ongoing training, to integrate best-of class learning experiences.

*Training on Google Classroom

*Training on Zoom

*Training on Screencastify, Kami, etc

Specific Result #3 Increase staff development opportunities that help each staff member reach the highest levels in their profession.

*Research Phase

Specific Result #4 Provide STEM opportunities, along with quality ongoing training to provide rich experiences for students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

*Discussed options for STEAM enrichment:

    • A comprehensive individualized computer-based program for intervention and enrichment opportunities for students.

    • Community resources with personnel available to deliver STEAM opportunities.

    • Offerings from UNL Seward County Extension Office in regard to STEAM for elementary classes.

*Analyzed Current offerings and researching possible options.

Specific Result #5 We will provide opportunities for our students, through strategic partnerships, to develop college and career readiness.

*Research was done to compile a list of our current community partnerships and what teachers are currently doing with these partnerships.

*A list of businesses was compiled and the team will be reaching out to the chamber of commerce to make a complete list of area businesses.

*A survey was created to share with area businesses to probe for involvement in classes at SHS.


Strategy 4

We will research, develop, and implement plans to create consistent systems to enhance student learning.

Specific Result #1 Update existing grading and assessments guidelines to clearly define expectations of grading for all stakeholders.

*Analyzed feedback about grading practices and report cards for reading and math from grade-level teams and specials teachers.

*Discussion in regard to best practices for grading and report cards at SES.

*Data from SHS teachers were collected and evaluated to show current grading practices.

*Grading terminology was created and weight percentages were added to show how each part of a class should be weighted (practice assignments, summative assignments, and comprehensive assignments).

*Standard guidelines for grading were created for SHS.


Specific Result #2 Establish a comprehensive review of our report cards and the information communicated and revise as necessary to communicate current instructional goals.

We will develop and implement plans to differentiate and expand our instructional delivery systems to meet each student's needs in a changing world.

Specific Result #1 Develop and implement plans to maximize instruction and intervention opportunities to meet the diverse academic needs of all students.

*Interventions were discussed and ways to “fine tune” the classes were outlined.

    • Timing of the i-Ready test, class sizes, intervention checklists, curriculum

*Researched ways to provide daily interventions for students which include academic intervention and restorative practices (SEL)

* Elementary- A comprehensive individualized computer-based program for intervention and enrichment opportunities for students.



Specific Result #2 Develop and implement plans to maximize instruction and enrichment opportunities to meet the diverse academic needs of all students.

*Examined SMS current practices and researched best practices in several areas of student enrichment (writing instruction, computer curriculum and instruction, STEAM, intervention, HAL)

*Elementary- A comprehensive individualized computer-based program for intervention and enrichment opportunities for students.
