Study Guide for Adjectives and Adverbs Grade 5

Adjectives tell which one, what kind, how many, or whose (possessives).

· Most of the time we show the adjective by drawing an arrow above the sentence to the noun it is describing.

· When an adjective follows a linking verb we call it a predicate adjective and label it PA

· Proper adjectives are capitalized because they are formed from a proper noun. Language names are the most common proper adjectives but there are others.

· Adjectives can be used to compare.

o Comparative forms of adjectives compare two nouns. The word than is usually found with them.

o Comparative adjectives that are one syllable words are formed by adding the –er ending. (Follow spelling rules.)

o Comparative adjectives that are three or more syllables are formed by adding the word more.

o If an adjective is two syllables, you need to go by what sounds right. (Never add –er and the word more to the same adjective.)

o Superlative forms of an adjective compare three or more. The word than will not be used.

o Superlative adjectives that are one syllable words are formed by adding the –est ending.(Follow spelling rules.)

o Superlative adjectives that are three or more syllables are formed by adding the word most.

o If an adjective is two syllables, you need to go by what sounds right. (Never add –est and the word most to the same adjective.)

o The word good is an adjective that has special comparative and superlative forms. It becomes better and best. Do NOT use good to tell how (you should use the adverb well instead).

o The word bad is an adjective that has special comparative and superlative forms. It becomes worse and worst.

Adverbs tell how, when, where, or why.

· Most of the time we show the adverb by drawing an arrow below the sentence to the verb it is describing.

· Sometimes an adverb acts as an intensifier and can describe an adjective or another adverb. Draw the arrow below the sentence to the word it intensifies. Words such as very, really, extremely, and truly are common intensifiers.

· Adverbs can be used to compare.

o Comparative forms of adverbs compare two things. The word than is usually found with them.

o Comparative adverbs that are one syllable words are formed by adding the –er ending. (Follow spelling rules.)

o Comparative adverbs that are three or more syllables are formed by adding the word more.

o If an adverb is two syllables, you need to go by what sounds right. (Never add –er and the word more to the same adverb.)

o Superlative forms of an adverb compare three or more. The word than will not be used.

o Superlative adverbs that are one syllable words are formed by adding the –est ending.(Follow spelling rules.)

o Superlative adverbs that are three or more syllables are formed by adding the word most.

o If an adverb is two syllables, you need to go by what sounds right. (Never add –est and the word most to the same adverb.)

o The word well is an adverb that has special comparative and superlative forms. It becomes better and best.

o The word badly is an adverb that has special comparative and superlative forms. It becomes worse and worst.

· Do not use double negatives. You can correct double negatives by either changing one negative to a positive or by removing a negative word.
