Science & Engineering
Scientific Investigation
Brain science shows that learning sticks when it incorporates multiple modalities. Our scientists investigate problems and phenomena via hands-on activities (SEP). They learn content (DCI) and scientific themes (CCC) through discussions while learning new vocabulary. They learn to record data in iterative science notebooks just like real scientists do!

Professional Development
Coffee with the Principal Parent Training
At my site, I presented and modeled what the 3 dimensions of NGSS looks like in a 4th grade classroom to a wide variety of parents. Student work examples from my classroom fueled rich discussion and understanding amongst participants.
Claim, Evidence, Reasoning Site Training & CER Materials (Adapted & Created)
Starting in 2015, I began collaborating with Jane Chen to develop Claim, Evidence, Reasoning graphic organizers, rubrics, and supplemental resources to support students science writing. I delivered professional development at my site and to 4th grade district teachers to enable a smooth transition to the Next Generation Science Standards.

Unit Plans
CA Science Standards Merged with NGSS 5 Es
Inspired by my work as a member of the District Science Leadership Team and with coaching from Jane Chen, I drafted 5 E-inspired units utilizing the 1998 CA Science Standards and our adopted science curriculum at the time (2015).

NGSS Earth Systems Unit Plan & Resources
I originally drafted a 4th grade NGSS Earth Science unit after collaboratively writing the district 4th & 5th grades NGSS Physical Science units (2016). I shared this unit with other 4th grade district teacher leaders to share with their teams. I also advocated for implementation of this unit at my site and secured funding for materials purchasing. I coordinated procuring/distributing materials and coaching my team on unit implementation.
NGSS Life Science Unit
I selected the most salient activities/resources and merged Amplify and Mystery Science life science curricula to best address the 3 Dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards: SEPs, DCIs, and CCCs.
Energy GLAD Unit
I wrote this Energy GLAD unit with Cindy Suth in 2016. We utilized this unit along with the Physical Science pilot unit I helped to write. I also utilized this unit while teaching our GLAD focused district summer school.

TinkerCad 3D Modeling & Hour of Code
Student leaders from the Charger Tech Crew modeled how to create music on Scratch for Hour of Code. A parent volunteer and student instructed students on how to 3D model on TinkerCad. Students then designed their own 3D models that would later be printed.

Dyson Design Challenge
Students identified classroom items that have utility but needed to be optimized. They designed, prototyped, redesigned, and tested their final products.
