Structured Literacy is explicit, systematic, cumulative, and diagnostic. Diagnostic means teachers must be adept at individualizing instruction based on careful and continuous assessments, both formal and informal. The cumulative nature of Structured Literacy means that students will not move forward successfully if we skip over skills they need.
This page includes examples of assessments you may use to determine where to begin instruction with your students. The same assessments can be used to monitor progress to proficiency.
Why would I use a spelling test to decide where to start reading instruction?
Spelling is not a visual skill. Spelling is a phonemic-orthographic skill; a system in which written symbols correspond to spoken sounds. The Words Their Way Diagnostic Spelling Inventory assesses students’ ability to write letters to represent the sounds they hear.
Once the spelling inventory is given and scored, you will be able to identify each student’s developmental level. This information can give you an idea of the appropriate level to begin Recipe for Reading instruction with your students.
Below are assessment spreadsheets you are welcome to copy and use with your class.
