January 2026
Happy New Year! We are excited to welcome fresh starts, new goals, and lots of learning as we begin the second semester. The first half of the school year was filled with wonderful memories, especially during December with our “December to Remember” spirit days, the fun of searching for Mo, our school elf, and our fantastic Christmas program. Seeing our students shine and our school community come together made the season extra special.
We hope everyone is enjoying a restful winter break from December 22 through January 2. We can’t wait to welcome students back on January 5 as we begin a new grading period filled with fresh starts, learning, growth, and success. Report cards will be sent home in Friday Folders on January 9 to celebrate all the hard work from the first semester. Wishing all of our students and families a happy, healthy, and successful New Year!
~Mrs. Garrison
Students in grades 3–5 will be taking ILEARN Checkpoint 2 this month. This formative assessment helps us see which standards students have already mastered and which ones they still need to work on before the spring summative assessment.
ELA Section: Week of January 12-16
Math Section: Week of January 19-23
You will be able to view your child’s results through the Parent Portal. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the front office.
Our PTO usually meets on the last Wednesday of each month, but we’ve adjusted the schedule for the winter months. Our next meeting will combine January and February and will be held on Wednesday, February 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Discovery Center. You can also join us virtually using this link. Thank you for your flexibility, and we look forward to seeing you there!
We love having our students at school, and regular attendance is important for learning and success. During cold and flu season, please help us keep everyone healthy by keeping students home when they are sick. If your child is sick, remember to report absences to the front office by 9:00 a.m.; absences not reported by that time will be marked unexcused. Parents have 24 hours after returning to school to provide a note or documentation to change an absence to excused. Students are allowed up to 10 excused absences per year, and any absences beyond 10 must have medical documentation in order to be excused. Thank you for partnering with us to support strong attendance and a healthy school community!
Congratulations to all of our students who earned Honor Roll recognition this grading period! Your hard work, dedication, and positive attitude have truly paid off, and we are so proud of you. Keep up the great work and continue striving for your best—way to go!
With winter weather here, it is a good time to review Shelby Eastern School's policy for school closures due to inclement weather. All students, parents, and teachers will be notified of school closure before 6:00 a.m. on the day of the closure. When we make the decision to close or delay we will communicate with local TV and Radio Stations, send an SMS text message to all students and staff, post to our website, and social media feeds.
IF we opt for eLearning on a closure day, please follow the guidelines outlined here.
District eLearning Guidelines.
Assignments: All staff will post assignments by 10:00 a.m. of the eLearning day.
Communication: Teachers will communicate with students through email and/or Rooms to establish a 2-hour office window for that day.
Due Dates: Posted assignments will have an extended due date window of three days, starting from the day they are assigned. Adjustments can be made for consecutive or extended eLearning days.
Attendance: Assignment completion will continue to be the basis for attendance on eLearning days.
As part of our Trust-Based Relationship Intervention (TBRI) approach, we are placing a special emphasis on teaching and modeling life value terms throughout our school. These values help guide positive choices, strengthen relationships, and support a safe, respectful learning environment for all students. Below are the life value terms we will be focusing on for the month of January, and we encourage families to talk about them at home as we work together to help our students grow.
