design | creationism | concept | evolve | perspective
Scientists believe that humans and chimpanzees both evolved from an ancestor that lived 5 to 7 million years ago. Supporters of creationism disagree completely; they believe God created humans as they are today. However, others believe in evolution but think that God began or guided it. The Gallup company has been polling Americans since 1982 to get their perspectives on this debate. They asked Americans which option best fit their views:
Americans’ Beliefs About Human Origins 1982-2024
“God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so.”
— — — “Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process.”
- - - - - - “Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process.
Which of the following is true about how Americans’ views have changed over time?
A. More people now believe in creationism.
B. More people now believe that God guided human evolution.
C. More people now believe that humans evolved over millions of years.
According to this poll, what was the probability that any one person chosen at random in 2024 believed that humans developed over millions of years?
While Americans’ views have evolved over time, these polls show that people are still divided in their beliefs about where humans came from. Why do people disagree so strongly about the concept of human evolution? Should the public’s beliefs about evolution and creationism be considered when deciding whether to teach intelligent design in schools?
