In the summer of 2019, I was given the opportunity to go to Uganda and student teach in a school. It was an experience that changed my view of the world and made me realize how much more there was in the world than the small part I had been exposed to in America. I loved learning about a new culture and enjoyed my time with the people of Uganda. After my summer there, I began to feel called back there. I began speaking with Serge: Grace at the Fray and saw the opportunity to connect what I have learned in school with educating children in a new culture. I have always believed that all students deserve an equal opportunity to learn. God has given me this amazing opportunity to continue to grow as an educator by applying the gifts He has given me and ministering to students as well as serve missionary families in a remote part of the world.
Serge is an international missions organization that sees God weaving together the frayed edges of our tattered world with His goodness, creating something beautiful. The core values of Serge are centrality of the gospel, ministry from weakness, prayer for the kingdom and love for people which align with my own values. Serge has required me to participate in a discipleship process called Sonship. This has helped to prepare me for going into the field and relying on God in every aspect of my life. I have been able to look at my own weaknesses and see where I am in need of God's grace and goodness in my life. God uses these weaknesses to bring me closer to Him. I know that Serge will support me in so many ways throughout this process and I am excited to see how God uses me to show His love and grace to others.
During my time in Bundibugyo, I am teaching third culture kids (TCK's). TCK's are children who spend their formative years outside their parents’ home country. I am given the opportunity to serve missionary families by taking the pressure of providing an education for the children off of the parents. God is using me to not only teach but love children who are growing up in a different enviroment than they would ordinarily be in. From movie nights to dinners together to being another hug they get in the day, my role on this team is a diverse and exciting one. I hope to provide support for the students as well as the parents and use the gifts God has given me to do so. I hope to also serve in the community and partner with local schools. Although COVID-19 has made getting involved in the community difficult, I am finding ways to be creative and look forward to there being more opportunities to learn in the future. It is a joy to follow God's will for my life by stepping out in faith and enjoying His work in me.
