SEED received a NOAA B-WET grant to create a Climate Literacy Framework based on the NOAA’s Essential Principles of Climate Literacy, California’s Next Generation Science Standards, and the requirements of AB285 (2023) to teach climate change in grades 1-12. We will bring together a broad coalition of partners to create an educational scope and sequence for K-12 educators, based on local climate action plans, school priorities, and industry partner input.
Climate literacy is an understanding of how the climate system works, how human actions influence climate, and how climate influences people and other parts of the Earth system. The Climate Literacy Essential Principles presents information that is important for individuals and communities to know and understand about Earth’s climate, the impacts of climate change, and solutions.
Climate change concepts are already included in California's Science Standards for grades K-12 public schools.
This Climate Change Concepts in CA NGSS matrix shows which concepts are explicitly taught and assessed in grades 1-12.
The bill AB 285 (2023) requires teaching about the cause and impacts of climate change, as well as strategies for adaptation and mitigation in grades 1-12 science classes.
