Here are our eligibility requirements and program details to become a Chef Trainee:
Be 16 – 28 years of age
Have the desire to become a chef or work a culinary job to pay for your next step in life
Have experienced hardship (low income, conflict with the law, lapse in school, involved with substance abuse, involved in gang violence, experienced domestic violence, learning disability)
Have an intermediate English language proficiency
Be willing to devote approx. 12 hours per week for 8 weeks (96 hours total)
Live in stable housing
Have access to reliable transportation (most students work on the Stanford campus)
Demonstrate enthusiasm, teamwork, focus, and vision
Have a reliable, working cell-phone that can receive texts and calls
Purpose:
To encourage high school seniors or college students to enroll in educational programs that will prepare them for careers connected to the pile driving industry and to provide opportunities for those students who receive financial support to liaise with PDCA
Who May Apply:
Any high school senior or current college student who will be enrolling full-time in an academic institution for the academic year beginning in the semester following the date of application. The student's choice of an academic field must be related to the pile driving industry (may include safety, engineering, accounting, IT, etc.) The applicant must be a Pacific Coast resident.
How to Apply:
The following materials must be included with the application:
A transcript of high school grades and/or college grades, through the last grading period prior to the date of application. The high school transcript must include ACT/SAT scores and class standing.
A letter of recommendation from the high school or college faculty.
A letter of sponsorship from a PDCA member considered to be in good standing. (Contact the PDCA office if you need help contacting a member.)
A high resolution photo of yourself to be used in PDCA publications, including PileDriver magazine.
Academic Institution:
The academic institution will be either a college/university or community college located in the United States which has a minimum two-year program related to building, construction or the driven pile industry.
Scholarship Program:
After approval by the scholarship committee, awards will be provided to recipients who meet the following criteria:
Maintains a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. If grades fall below this level, he/she will be placed on probation for one semester. If grade level does not return to the needed level, future scholarship awards will be forfeited.
Continues to pursue a course of study in the fields previously referenced.
Submits transcripts each semester as soon as they are available.
Provides proof of enrollment in an approved educational institution.
Scholarship Awarding Process:
Scholarship application are due by 07-01-2025 for the academic year beginning in the fall of 2025.
Applications will be received by the PDCA office and reviewed by PDCA staff to ensure that the application have been completed correctly, and that all requested information has been provided.
PDCA staff will remove names of the student, parents, and the applicant's sponsor, prior to passing the applications to the Scholarship Committee. The committee will use established criteria to score the students on an equal points system based on items included with the applicant's submission. Scholarships will be awarded to the top scoring applicants.
