When Should You Get Your Kid a Phone?
The tools below represent the more common and successful tools used by parents and staff in our community. There are advantages and disadvantages to each tool, and often a combination of tools is needed to achieve the desired outcomes. There is not a single tool that meets every need, nor is there a tool that works perfectly. Adjustments, trade-offs, and patience are required to getting a solution put together that works for your family. It is important to note that the control settings of these tools may interfere with the ability for your child to access resources and learning tools at school. It is important to configure restrictions/limits with full consideration of school hours and needs. Teachers will reach out if there is an issue, and our tech support team welcomes visits from parents to consult with you on your settings if you are not able to resolve issues from home.
Allows you to filter content and apps, monitor activity, set time limits and more.
Apple Screen Time (Parental Controls and Monitoring )
Available only for Apple devices. Screen Time lets you know how much time you and your kids spend on apps, websites, and more. This way, you can make more informed decisions about how you use your devices, and set limits on time and application use/installation if you'd like. Visit this page for an overview on Apple's built-in parental controls using Screen Time. For instructions on setting up Screen Time on a macbook laptop, go to this page. For instructions specific to an iPhone or iPad, go to this page.
Google Family Link (Parental Controls and Monitoring)
Available for controlling Android mobile devices and use of Google sites/tools on the web. Family Link lets you know how much time you and your kids spend on apps, websites, and more when on a supported device and signed in with a 'Child' Google account. This way, you can make more informed decisions about how you use your devices, and set limits if you'd like to. Get started here at this page. Note: You cannot add your child's SFS email account to Family Link as that is already associated with our school and Google's limits and restrictions for education accounts. You can create a personal account for your child to control use on home/personal devices and services that are not available with a school account.
Digital Wellbeing (for Android devices)
On Android phones you can also get info about how you spend time on your phone and how long you use each app. You can use that info to improve your digital wellbeing. For example, you can set app timers and schedule display changes. Look at this page of directions to set this up on your Android devices.
Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 10 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.
