Supervisors

CAS Supervisors:

Can be teachers, non-teaching members of the school or wider community, or volunteers with the skills and/or knowledge of the CAS experience undertaken by the student. Their role includes:

  • Be familiar with elements of the CAS programme as applicable

  • Be responsible for student safety and risk management procedures

  • Provide students with guidance, support and feedback on the CAS experience

  • Encourage reflection

  • Comment on the student’s engagement with the experience talking about their progress, commitment and effort. (supervisors will receive an email request)

  • You do not need to interview students.

Please do not take on too many students as a supervisor, consider your health & wellbeing.

1. The supervisor should support and vouch for the student. Basically, the supervisor helps the student during the activity and makes sure that the student is safe during the activity. The supervisor also judges if the student is invested in the experience and is an active participant.

2. Another important role (maybe the most important for CAS), will happen at the end of the experience when the student asks you to review the experience.

During the experience, the student will be adding reflections in their CAS portfolio on personal learning objectives.

Example.

For their experience, the student chose to focus on their collaborative skills and on their understanding of a global issue.

The student will share with you their reflections, and based on these reflections, you will have to assess if the student has demonstrated growth in these 2 learning outcomes. It doesn't mean that they became an expert in these skills, it simply means that through their reflections, you are able to see that the student grew in these skills.

After reading (or listening to) their reflections, you will be asked to complete a short survey (the supervisor review) to complete her experience.

All supervisors must be contacted formally before the students put them into the documentation on ManageBac. If you feel this hasn't happened and a student has taken it as an expectation then please let them know, as the email they send should be used as part of their evidence.

If you have not agreed to be a supervisor and your name has been put in then please inform Mr Henderson (CAS Coordinator)
