Audition Information
Any percussion or jazz studies student interested in majoring or minoring in music must audition. Students majoring in other subjects but would like to be considered for a performance award are also able to audition for a performance scholarship award.
Snare Drum: Orchestral or rudimental étude or solo.
Keyboard Percussion: 2, 3, or 4 mallet étude or solo on any keyboard percussion instrument (marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, glockenspiel).
Timpani: Étude or solo for 2 or more timpani.
Encouraged, but not mandatory:
Drum Set: Demonstration of time and soloing in the following styles: medium swing, up-tempo swing, rock, bossa nova, and samba.
Orchestral Percussion: Excerpt for any of the following orchestral percussion instruments - bass drum, castanets, crash cymbals, tambourine, triangle.
World Percussion: Demonstrate basic skills and techniques on the world percussion instrument of your choice (conga drum, timbales, djembe, dumbek, etc.) with an emphasis on good time and feel.
Snare Drum: Delécluse snare drum étude or advanced level étude/solo of your choice.
Prokofiev: Lt. Kije, Mvmt. I, rehearsal 1 to rehearsal 2.
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade, Mvmt. IV, 4 measures before Letter N to 18 measures after Letter N.
Marimba: Advanced level 4-mallet marimba solo suitable for a senior recital.
Xylophone: Gershwin, Porgy and Bess.
Glockenspiel: Mozart, Magic Flute.
Timpani: Advanced level timpani étude/solo of your choice.
Beethoven: Symphony No.9, Mvmt. IV, 7 measures after letter T to the end.
Encouraged, but not mandatory:

1. All students auditioning for the Jazz Studies Concentration should demonstrate the following:
Brass, Woodwinds, Guitar, Piano, Bass: Two classical pieces of contrasting style (contact the Professor of your Primary Instrument for more information) and scales.
Drum Set: As outlined in the Undergraduate Percussion Audition Requirements. Demonstrate trading “4’s” i.e. play 4 measures of time, 4 measures of solo, in various styles. Demonstrate other percussion ability as capable, as outlined in the Undergraduate Percussion Audition Requirements.
2. Two jazz tunes, i.e. a blues and a jazz standard. Standards can be chosen from http://jazzstandards.com/compositions/index.htm and can be found in the Jamey Aebersold catalog of Play-A-Longs or Real Book lead sheets.
The format to follow when performing these pieces is:
• Play the melody (1 time through)
• Improvise over the chord changes (minimum 2 choruses)
• Comp (if applicable) by walking, playing the chord changes, and playing time (minimum 2 choruses)
**A stereo system and speakers will be available for the use of Play-A-Long accompaniment**
