Morning Keynote Address

My speech traces a uniquely Louisiana journey shaped by life near water, scientific curiosity, and community service. It begins in South Louisiana during the era of the Cajun Mariner, where my early life on the bayou instilled resilience, humility, and a deep sense of community. Driven by a fascination with how the world works, that upbringing led me to the study of physics, a discipline that cultivated patience, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the invisible forces that shape both our universe and lives. My narrative then follows an unexpected turn into a career at M&M/Mars, first as a crop forecaster and later as an internet digital marketer, revealing how science, agriculture, and human behavior intersect in global business industry. Ultimately, Louisiana called me and my young family home. There I finally got into the family boat business, where work in scientific coring and building America’s first offshore wind farm bridged the worlds of Cajun boat tradition with modern innovation in power generation. Public service followed, marked by a reputation as a “unicorn legislator” willing to cross boundaries and prioritize evidence-based leadership. Today, that commitment continues through advocacy for coastal restoration and community resilience. At its heart, my speech affirms that every step—from the Cajun Coast to the Capitol—reflects a belief that Louisiana deserves leaders who honor its past while building its future.
Joseph A. Orgeron, Ph.D., grew up on the bayous of south Louisiana and earned the B.S. in Physics from Nicholls State University and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Dallas. He began a career at the M&M/Mars Company as a Commodity Scientist before returning home to join the family’s offshore lift boat company, Montco Offshore, leading projects from specialty construction to early U.S. offshore wind work. Elected to the Louisiana House in 2020 and re elected in 2023, he now serves on legislative key committees. In addition, he is Executive Director of Restore or Retreat, advancing coastal restoration and an “All of the Above” energy strategy for the Bayou Region.
