Newcomers and long-term language learners benefit from writing consistently throughout the day. During this session, teachers of core subjects and electives will explore ways to offer deliberate writing practice focusing on the sentence and paragraph level. The participants will sample activities and participate in simulated mini-lessons that support and foster writing skills that students need to develop functional literacy and to perform at their full potential on the written portion of the state exams.
This session offers ELA/ELAR teachers an insight into the unique needs of multilingual writers and provides practical strategies to address these needs. The session is designed to offer ELA teachers a variety of techniques to enhance their writing instruction for newcomer and long-term language learners. During the session, the participants will sample activities for the sentence and paragraph level instruction and participate in simulated mini-lessons.
This session outlines simple steps that will make both Short Constructed Response and Extended Constructed Response less threatening. Participants will explore approaches for Grade 3-12 ESL and ELA teachers to scaffold instruction and to boost students’ performance in writing. The session includes an opportunity to examine the required elements of the short constructed response and the extended constructed response and learn to help students incorporate these elements into their writing. During the session we will use sentence stems, graphic organizers, and short videos. Our participants will walk away with multiple tools to prepare students of all language levels for the ELA STAAR/EOC Writing.
