Course Description: Advanced Placement (AP) European history is an introductory college course. It will not be easy, but neither is it impossibly difficult. AP European history will be demanding, but also rewarding. AP courses require more work, but they allow for greater opportunity to master the subject and to explore it in greater depth. By taking this course, high school students have an opportunity to receive college placement and/or credit. The course follows a basic chronological approach while making connections between historical time periods and events. Â
Solid reading and writing skills, along with a willingness to devote considerable time to homework and study are necessary to succeed. Emphasis is placed on critical and evaluative thinking skills, essay writing, interpretation of primary sources, and historiography. Students are responsible for keeping up with reading assignments and being aware of, and ready for a variety of assessments. The class will be a combination of lecture, group work, coverage of discussion questions and student-driven questions, Socratic seminar, and various other activities that promote student engagement. Periodically, student essays, reports, presentations, and/or projects will be required.
