Hello, and welcome to 6th grade social studies. Teaching social studies to 6th grade has been a dream of mine for a very long time. Teaching is a new chapter in my life and I am excited about learning as much about World Geography as my students will. By studying our world we can better understand we are today and be better equipped to make our world a better place.
In the first couple weeks of school, you will receive an invitation for Guardian access on my Google Classroom. By accepting this invitation, Classroom will email you summaries of your child's missing work and upcoming assignments. These summaries will also include announcements or questions I post.
While the 6th grade team has been using Google Classroom for a few years now, this platform has become more important than ever in learning environments. Having this access will allow you to keep up to date on your child's activity and learning.
"Be here. Be Present. Wherever you are, be there." -Willie Nelson-
Being in class, here at school, or in your own home, is an opportunity to set aside all the insanity of this world and focus on what you are doing at that moment. While it is important to keep our future goals in mind, being fully present allows us to concentrate on our greater purpose. When you come to class, or start your learning at home, set the rest of the world aside and be completely present. Be in class physically, mentally, and emotionally.
“Discover a purpose that gives you passion. Develop a plan that makes you persistent. Design preparations that motivate you to optimize your potentials. Do it because you love it!”
― Israelmore Ayivor, Dream Big!: See Your Bigger Picture!
With everything we do in Social studies, we need to remember our goal. For me it is helpful to stay focused on my greater purpose. Personally, my purpose is to become a better human being AND to help others do the same. What is your purpose?
Being "peaceful" in our class does not mean "go to sleep." Peacefulness means that we remain calm and kind in this chaotic world. Every moment is a new opportunity to take a breath and let the chaos of the world stay with the world. Social studies class, the time we have together, is a safe place for all of us. We all have a responsibility to protect that by being peaceful within ourselves and within our classroom.
