Opening and Welcome

Keynote

Donalyn is the author or co-author of several books about creating engaging and inclusive reading communities for all children. In her first book, The Book Whisperer (Jossey-Bass, 2009), Donalyn reflects on her journey to become a reading teacher and describes how she inspires and motivates her middle school students to read 40 or more books a year. In a starred review, Library Journal said, “Her approach is simple yet provocative: affirm the reader in every student, allow students to choose their own books, carve out extra reading time, model authentic reading behaviors, discard timeworn reading assignments such as book reports and comprehension worksheets, and develop a library filled with high-interest books.”

Scrible

Scrible is a research and writing platform that is available to all K-12 students in Utah. With Scrible, students can curate research, annotate, and cite all within the same platform. Come and learn the features of Scrible so you can help your students be better researchers.

Librarian/Teacher Collaboration for Touchstone Learning : Support for books taking you places you have never been.

The session will show how to work with librarians to create hands-on learning opportunities that support a book or specific class content. The presenter will show history boxes, touchstone experience options that span grades 7-12. Participants will leave with ideas to use and how to plan and collaborate with someone in their school.

Computer Science in Your Media Center

In this session we will take a look at the Utah Computer Science standards and explore how you can use robotics to teach the standards in your media centers. We’ll also look at learning opportunities to help you feel comfortable with CS in YOUR media center!

Explore, Create, and Collaborate with eMedia

eMedia is a digital library of free educational resources created specifically for Utah educators. eMedia allows you to explore, create, and collaborate with educators around the state to improve curriculum. In this session, learn the basics of exploring eMedia resources using search functions, filters, curated collections, and hubs. Learn how to create and share your own resources using the Open Author tool and UEN's lesson plan template. And learn how to use eMedia's collaboration and feedback tools to build your online professional learning network.

Motivating Students to Independently Read: Monthly Engagement and Daily Dialogue.

This session will share several ideas of reader engagement to increase circulation and get students into your library. Mrs. Maxwell will discuss and show monthly library reading challenges, independent choice boards, pin collecting and monthly non reading activities to grow your reading culture.

Using Nearpod for Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy

In this hands-on session we will cover the basics of using Nearpod for lesson delivery and collaboration while exploring the pre-made lessons for teaching digital citizenship and media literacy.

Grants as Fuel: How to Get and Manage Grants to Fund Library Projects for Success

Often times librarians have great project ideas but are not sure on how to pay for them. This is where grants come in! Learn how to find grants, some tips for writing, and tools for successfully completing a grant project.
