Mrs. Howes’ Homework Policy

Purpose: Homework is important to student learning. It is a meaningful assignment or activity that is performed outside the classroom to support instruction. I realize that children are involved in extracurricular activities that are time consuming. I feel that balancing social and academic activities is important in the development of the whole child. It also helps to develop executive functioning.

Rules:

· Homework assignments are given in class. It is the student’s responsibility to ask any questions they may have about the assignment before the end of the school day.

· Homework assignments will be posted on the website, on RenWeb 1 and should be written in their planner.

· Complete the assignment on time. Late work is posted in RenWeb as not prepared for class ( this shows up under the Behavior tab

· Most day’s there will be time allotted to work on homework. Students should use this time wisely to avoid conflicts with extracurricular activities.

· For every day the student is absent they have one day extra to complete the assignment. EX. If you miss 3 days- you have 3 days to complete all the assignments.

· 6th graders can expect no more than 60 minutes of homework per night. 7th graders 70 minutes and 8th graders 80 minutes. Please see me if there are issues about time being spent outside this parameter.

Once notice that an assignment is late or missing has been provided to parents (either recorded via RenWeb or communicated in another format), the student will have 2 business days to complete the assignment for 50% of earned credit. Work not submitted after this point will become a permanent ‘0’

  • All work including homework must be completed in cursive AND in pencil.

Consequences:

· . Also posted in RenWeb as not prepared of class. Three write-ups in RenWeb results in an after school detention. Three detentions result in an in- house suspension

· Homework contract

Weekends:

Your Family time is important to me. No extra homework will be given on weekends. If a student fails to complete assignments or a project given in class they will need to do complete the work on their time.

Tips:

· Record your homework in the same location every day.

· Ask your teacher questions to make sure the expectations of your assignment are clear.

· Know, record, and monitor due dates. Check the website!

· Have a quiet space with basic materials for homework completion.

· Make homework part of your daily after school routine.

· Take a break when tired then, resume your work.

· Try to do your homework by yourself first. If you struggle then ask a parent or another student. If you still don’t understand, put a sticky next to the question and ask Mrs. Howes the next day (if you have a question, chances are someone else does too!)

· Respect that you need a balance between rest, work, and play to be a healthy well-rounded student!
