Google Ad Manager is a Supply Side Platform and an Ad Server. It utilizes Google Ad Exchange to enable programmatic auctions. GAM was formerly known as DFP or Doubleclick for Publishers. It is primarily a platform where Publishers (inventory holders, such as websites) sell their inventory via Programmatic buys and contains ad serving capabilities. Ad Servers can be stand-alone technology companies, but in the case of GAM the two functions are combined. DFP was originally its own company prior to its acquisitiion by Google in 2007.
