As we gather to share music together, we want to tell you about a moment that defines Seattle Pro Musica.
Recently, we were offered a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. While honored by this recognition, we declined. Accepting would have required us to sign a pledge against diversity, equity, access, and inclusion programming – directly conflicting with our core belief that "everyone deserves equal access to a full and vibrant creative life."
This decision was especially impactful because the funding would have supported our New American Composers Series, which since 2021 has commissioned brilliant BIPOC composers and served hundreds of local students, most from historically marginalized communities.
Declining $25,000 wasn't easy, but it was essential. Through community support, we are committed to maintaining pay-what-you-can pricing, free student tickets, streaming concerts, living wages for our staff, and programming that reflects our full community.
If you're able to make a gift, you'll help us bridge this funding gap and continue our bold, inclusive vision. Every contribution makes a tangible difference.

In March, we’re thrilled to welcome Nilo Alcala for our annual showcase of rising composers. Nilo is the first Philippine born composer to be commissioned by the GRAMMY-winning Los Angeles Master Chorale, and his award-winning works are performed around the world. We will present the world premiere of The Traveler’s Song, and we’ll be joined in concert by choirs from local schools to celebrate Nilo’s work.
And finally, in May, we join Auburn Symphony Orchestra and conductor Wesley Schulz to perform two masterworks: Mozart’s Requiem and Osvaldo Golijov’s Oceana. Oceana sets the poetry of Pablo Neruda to music that melds J.S. Bach with South American rhythms. With chorus, chamber orchestra, guitars, harp, and a Brazilian jazz vocalist, Golijov invokes the ocean with stunning effect. Mozart’s Requiem is a timeless journey from darkness toward light and resolution. Together, these works will take you on a profound exploration of the unknown.
All of our concerts will be streamed online approximately one week following our live performances; register for free at seattlepromusica.org.
