SAAS BOARD DECIDES TO DIVEST FROM FOSSIL FUELS (May 2024)!
In May 2024, the SAAS Board of Trustees voted in favor of the Climate Empowerment Club's Divestment Proposal, ending our school's financial support for the fossil fuel industry. SAAS's decision demonstrates their care for our future and dedication to empowering students as learners and leaders.

For more than a year, SAAS has declined to announce divestment to avoid accountability. Spread the word to help keep our school's investments fossil fuel free! We will be launching a thank-you note campaign soon. Keep an eye out!
Student testimonial:
It’s hypocritical of SAAS to preach innovation when they’re investing in corporations who use not only outdated but harmful practices. I don’t want to go to a school that fuels climate change that will devastate the world.
Student testimonial:
For SAAS students to successfully contribute boldly to a changing world, I believe it’s SAAS’s job to show students how this is done. I personally believe investing in companies that contribute to the climate crisis does not follow these guiding principles. We must adapt to what is necessary to safeguard a future for everyone.
- Elena Newton-Day
Faculty testimonial:
I don't think there's any more pressing issue we face than the climate crisis, and if SAAS has any tiny ability to take some fraction of power away from the fossil fuel industry, it's our responsibility to set an example and do it.
- Brittany Ruhland, biology teacher
Parent testimonial:
As a physician and parent, I know that nothing threatens my children’s future more than the climate emergency, and nothing is driving that emergency more than the fossil fuel companies. Many of our kids already feel that it is pointless to pursue an education - we need to show them that as adults we are doing what we can to preserve the future so they have the space and security to explore their young lives without terror for the future. We owe them divestment.
- Dr. Lisa Erlanger
It’s time for SAAS to be in alignment with the science. Please stop funding fossil fueled climate change through SAAS investments.
- Heather Price, PhD & SAAS Parent
I think that as an institution that prioritizes innovation and preparing students for success in the future, it is important that our school acknowledges that a changing climate is making our future less and less livable. One of the major ways to pressure companies that are contributing to climate degradation is by not investing our money in them, which is why I think it is so important that institutions divest money from fossil fuel companies.
Be the change you want to see in the world. If we want people to start putting money into a clean and sustainable future, then we need to be the first ones to make those hard choices.
We care deeply about the kids at SAAS, and it's crucial that everyone transition away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible in order for our kids to have a great future.

Our future is in our hands and will not change unless we do
I feel like my tuition is contributing to the use of fossil fuels and the fact that younger kids will be using this space is unsettling
It's an important position and statement to make around the dangers of a fossil fuel-based economy, particularly for a progressive institution such as SAAS that serves the generation which will experience the harshest impacts of climate change in human history.
I’m scared of the future and I don’t want to die young. My parents have saved up so much money for SAAS and the idea that I might be funding something destructive not only to me but our world is very disturbing.
The human contribution to the world’s climate emergency is real. Money talks. Pulling stock investments from fossil fuel companies sends a clear message.
