At the beginning of each school year, each school site will hold elections to select their site representatives. Each elected site rep serves a two-year term. Each site is entitled to at least one representative and is allowed one rep for every 15 bargaining unit member on the staff. If you wish to be a site rep for the year, contact the lead rep at your site to let them know you are interested in running for election as one of your site’s SEA representatives. Even if you are running unopposed, your site still must hold an election to confirm you as a site rep.
Site reps are required to attend Site Rep Council meetings, which are held once a month. Meetings are on Tuesdays, typically the third Tuesday of the month. They begin at 4:30 PM and usually last until around 6:00 PM with dinner included. During these meetings, SEA Reps vote on current issues and get information to pass on to members. Once per month, Site Reps should meet with their members to discuss issues brought up at Site Rep Council.
Site Reps also represent members during disciplinary or potentially disciplinary meetings. Your role is to uphold the contract and ensure that administrators and the district follow the contract in situations where there is a dispute. Because of the Duty of Fair Representation, a Site Rep's job is to represent the contract, due process, and therefore all bargaining unit members, even non-union members.
You may also join a committee if you are interested in getting involved with a specific role or issue within the union.
