Program Descriptions

Please read the descriptions carefully

    • Several programs involve out-of-state travel. In these instances a minimum of 10 participants and immediate deposits were necessary to secure travel and other features of the specific program. You were contacted directly in these instances.

    • While most programs will be held from Monday through Thursday, some will begin and end on different days, particularly if off-island flights are involved.

    • Some programs require that you arrange individual student transportation as on other school days to your activity, but many include van rentals driven by faculty. A budget is provided to each group for advance planning meetings with faculty in January.

    • Regular bus service is operational to and from campus Monday-Thursday.

ATHLETES PLEASE NOTE:

    • It is your responsibility prior to submitting your selections to confirm with your coach(es) any team obligation that precludes participation in certain programs.

PAYMENT INFORMATION:

  • Winterim programs are billed by the school business office and are charged to your Smart Tuition account.

  • If your Smart Tuition account is set up for Auto Pay, your payment will be drawn on December 20th. Any other arrangements should be discussed with the Business Office.

  • If you were required to provide an immediate deposit/payment for enrollment in a specific travel program and have questions, you are requested to communicate with the business office.


Selection period is November 22nd- through December 13th, and placement notification is via email to student and parent(s) on December 16th.



*** Because change and unexpected events are a part of life, we will do our best to keep you informed in a timely manner should a program be canceled or altered significantly. Once you have been notified of placement it becomes necessary to inform the coordinator should family circumstances change. ***

  1. Advanced Open Water Scuba - $600

This Open Water Certification two day course is Tuesday-WednesdayYour first day is from shore and your second will be from the boat in Kihei. Prior to Winterim week you will be given a PADI e-learning code and will need to pass the online PADI course. On the fourth day there is a “Dive against Debris” course which includes e-learning and two dives. YOU MUST BE A CERTIFIED DIVER.You will arrange transportation to the shop in Kihei (Maui Dreams) and there is a snack and beverage budget for you to work with during your January meetings at school. You must be certified medically fit by your physician and be prepared to remain at lower elevations after your dives.

2. Aerial Silks - $235

This four-day intensive at Maui Aerial Arts will teach students the basics of aerial silks including

  • climbing

  • knot work

  • footlock skills

  • silks choreography basics

Skill Showcase - Thursday, FEB 16 at 2:15 pm

Students will either perform a short piece or do a skill demonstration. This allows you to invite parents to see what they have learned and to take photos at the end of the session if you like.

Students must wear snug fitting, yoga type clothing that covers the backs of knees and armpits. Please bring full water bottles, lunch, and snacks.

Maui Aerial Arts is located in Haiku Town Center at 810 Haiku Road, Unit 157 A & B. Park in the main parking lot and look for the red True Value sign. Our doors are right on the corner of the cannery near the sign.

3. Aquarium Adventure at the Maui Ocean Center - $350

Arrive at the Maui Ocean Center on time each day and spend your week working up close and personal with the critters there. You’ll learn how to care for marine animals and educate the public about the importance of Maui’s coral reefs. During this hands-on experience, rotating in small groups, you will be taught by MOC aquarists and naturalists and assisted by curators as you feed and measure turtles, moon jellies, reef fish and various corals. You will be cleaning exhibits, recording behavioral data, speaking with visitors and much more! Lunch is included. NEEDED: Wetsuit or rash guard, mask, and transportation. Program is offered to 9 students only.

4. Art Studio Sampler -- $250

In this program you will spend Monday and Tuesday engaged in artistic pursuits on camps. You’ll explore the professional studios at Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center on Wednesday and Thursday.


Explore the world of jewelry making, while you design wearable pieces of art and learn many traditional skills. Students will make a custom pendant as they use a jeweler's saw to cut and pierce sheet metal. These unique pendants will reflect individual student's interests and style as various options will be presented. Students may choose to focus on delicate layered openwork, adding stamped text, and/or placing a bezel set gemstone within their designs. Students will also create rings & bracelets! They will learn how to determine measurements for specific sizes, solder with a mini torch, and shape & texture them with a variety of hammers. Brass and copper will be provided for all projects.

Additional silver available for purchase by check/ cash in the studioStudents who would like to create sterling silver jewelry, may bring in their own solid sheet and wire stock, or they will have the option to purchase sterling silver during class, which is priced according to weight. $25-$50 should be sufficient depending on the size/weight of the student's designs. Cash & checks are the only accepted forms of payment for jewelry supplies and metals need to be paid for before use.

5. Automotive Workshop -- $100

This on campus program is intended to offer you more than an oil change! Mr. Cornell is prepared to teach you even more than you already know about your vehicle (or someone elseʻs!) . Youʻll be able to use the group meetings in January to plan your week. Get ready to get in and get dirty!

6. Beginning SCUBA Certification -- $600

This Open Water Certification three day course is Monday-Wednesday. These three days are from shore in Kihei. 7. Cooking and Baking -- $165

In addition to organizing a shopping trip for fresh ingredients, students will spend Monday-Thursday cooking in the commercial kitchen at St. John’s Church in Keokea. Join chef Vinnie Linares on this fantastic culinary adventure in upcountry Maui. Of course you’ll be eating what you prepare! You will be expected to meet at Keokea Park each day, and to bring your curiosity and appetite.

8. Critter Care at East Maui Animal Refuge -- $125

Spend your time helping out at the East Maui Animal Refuge in Haiku. Known for decades as the Boo Boo Zoo, Sylvan and his crew are always in need of volunteers to help with the cats, goats, pigs, deer, turkeys, ducks, chickens, and just about every variety of bird you can imagine! We will be doing whatever the most pressing need is, from fencing to feeding and everything in between.

9. Farm to Table -- $125

Visit local farms and see how things are done. From seed to market, gain hands-on knowledge and experience from our farmers as you spend the day on a variety of commercial farms. If time allows, we will include flower farms as well as those producing vegetables and fruit. Meet on campus and travel by van together and have a great time. Papayas, kale, heliconia….oh my!

10. Film Winterim! -- $125

Travel around Maui by van to collect images and film of the programs that are out and about. Return to campus with your footage and edit into a fabulous video celebration of the return of our traditional Winterim Week! Experience isnʻt necessary but a desire to have fun, learn, and create a great product is. Youʻll have a master schedule and can plan your week in January. This is a wonderful project for anyone interested in storytelling, journalism, or film.

11. Habitat for Humanity -- $100

Help a family build their own home and know that, in addition to acquiring new skills and understanding, you will have forever defined the way this family views teenagers, strangers, and the world. When you help build a home for a neighbor you are building community and creating a true ohana. You may be asked to do anything from framing to landscaping by your experienced foreman. The home building is scheduled to take place in either Waiehu or Waiohouli. Van and beverages are included.

12. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiʻi Island -- $1050

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is Hawai‘i’s number one natural attraction, with one of the world’s most active volcanoes--Kilauea. The park is designated as a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

From the sea coast to the alpine summit of Mauna Loa, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park protects a wide diversity of ecosystems and habitat for native Hawaiian plants and animals. In this program, you’ll learn about the park’s unique and invaluable natural resources, and ways to help protect them. Hands-on service-learning projects may include invasive weed removal, seed collecting and processing, and/or native species planting. You’ll also have a chance to explore the ecology of a Hawaiian rain forest, learn about life on recent lava flows, study volcanic activity at Kilauea Caldera, and see the glow shining inside Halema‘uma‘u crater at night.

Other field trips may include the park’s native plant nursery and/or the rare plant propagation facility, growing some of the rarest species on earth. As guests of the Friends of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park we will receive four night’s lodging and meals at the Kilauea Volcano Military Camp located inside the park.This program and access to professionals in botany, geology, and volcanology are also sponsored by the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park: www.fhvnp.org. Costs are all-inclusive and the trip is limited to 12 students.

Your flights to and from Hilo are on Sunday afternoon with a return on Thursday afternoon.

13. Independent College Visit (available once in Jr. or Sr. year) -- $0

If you are a Junior or Senior you may choose to use this one-time opportunity to travel to out-of-state colleges and universities. Visit with campus representatives and tour schools you may be considering, get a better feel for the larger community and environs and determine if it is a good fit for you. You will need to fill out and return a simple college intent form (available for download on the Seabury Hall website and in the Upper School Office) and submit it to the college counseling office by the due date, November 30th. If your plans change at a later date and you find you are unable to travel, please notify us and we will do our best to find a relevant program of interest for you.

14. Independent Leadership Week -- $0

Do you have a career idea? Do you know a professional in your area of interest that would be willing to mentor you this week and allow you to shadow them in a real life experience? You will want to submit your plans with contact and schedule details via an email to the Winterim Coordinator for approval. After placement confirmation, itʻs a simple matter of being present, attentive, and absorbing as much as possible.

15. Latin and Salsa Dance -- $175

Students will study the basics (and beyond) of Latin Dancing with local instructor Stephen Smith. The week will be split into two days of Bachata style choreography from the Dominican Republic and two days of Salsa from Cuba and Puerto Rico! We will study footwork, body movement, partner work, musicality, improvisation, dance etiquette and more!


Even if you think you have two left feet, but are still a bit curious, come try it out!

This class promises to be supportive and patient to all who want to get their groove on!

Great for building confidence, developing social skills, exercising the body, and having fun!

Learning dance is learning to connect -- with music, with oneself, and with others -- and it lasts a lifetime! Youʻll need to bring lunch and water and meet at a Central Maui Studio.

16. Lei the Hawaiʻian Way -- $150

Can you picture yourself gathering botanicals using traditional protocol and receiving instruction and a solid “how-to” when making a variety of lei adornment? Would you like to spend the week making lei outside on a lauhala mat under a tree? Add friends and a break for lunch and youʻll have the most wonderful week ever!

17. Maui Dayhikes -- $120

Where do you want to go? Plan your own group hikes into the spectacular hidden beauty of our island. We are blessed with an abundant variety of terrain, altitude, and weather zones. Perhaps you’d like to concentrate on a particular ahupuaʻa. Maybe you’ve never walked the King’s Trail or hiked up above the wind farm. These four days allow you the time and breathing space to enjoy and explore Maui Nui with your friends. Sound good? You will plan your adventures with your group in January. The cost is for a van, gas, snacks & beverages for four fun days. You will want to bring a bag lunch.

18. Nuʻu Conservation with Hawaiian Island Land Trust -- $210

The Hawaiian Island Land Trust is sponsoring our trip to culturally important Trust land at Nuʻu to explore a now-protected conservation area. Expect meaningful service project work in the great outdoors, and come prepared to learn and grow in your knowledge of this special place. To become a true steward of the land you must know the land, and this is a great first step!

We will also use technology to capture site data, including drone footage, to develop a 3D Site Map and use a Geographical Information System to map artifacts, conservation activity, and points of interest to tell the story of this special location.

We will spend Monday on campus preparing our equipment and practicing data capture, Tuesday doing conservation work and camping overnight, then a day of data collection on Wednesday before spending the final day Thursday on campus to process the data and generate a story map, and possibly a 3D printed model of the site or special artifacts.

19. Oʻahu Excursion -- $650

This is a spectacular opportunity to explore as much of urban and rural Oahu as you are able in four short days. With your group in January you will plan your own activities in advance (Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, Shangi La, The Honolulu Museum of Art, UH Manoa, Valley of the Temples, Waikiki, Ala Moana,…the list is endless) and fly as a group on to Honolulu on Monday and home on Thursday.

Oahu is rich with natural and cultural resources as well (Lyon Arboretum, Lanikai Pillbox, Northshore, Makapuʻu, Kaniakapupu Ruins, Pali Lookout…). You’ll be spending 3 nights at Camp Mokuleia on the northshore right on the beach! The lodge is reserved for our group but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag and towel as well as personal supplies.

Everything else is included to make this a trip you’ll never forget! You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the Kahului airport.

20. Photography on the Road -- $125

This adventurous course will offer a new perspective of the world through the eye of the camera. We will learn to 'see' with a camera, the way an artist sees, as we explore composition and photographic techniques on location. Nature is our classroom. We will go on a new photographic journey each day, as we explore unique aspects of our island life. Students must bring a digital camera (with a zoom lens capability) and have access to a printer at home. We are providing transportation and lunch.

21. Pigments & Painting at Hui Noʻeau -- $275

Experience a Renaissance revival through painting!


We will be going back in time and following in the footsteps of the old masters. Using materials foraged locally, we will extract natural pigments to make our own oil paint. On canvas, our artistic emphasis will be on realistic naturalism and the observable world. Students will learn how to create the illusion of form and light by training the eye and learning ways to organize this perception. How we organize our thinking to capture a three dimensional representation of an object will be taught by learning how to correctly calibrate value and simplify what we see. We will then apply our understanding of value as an aspect of color. Your Instructor is Sachelle Dae.



22. Self Defense Martial Arts -- $245

This fantastic four-day workshop is led by 3rd degree black belt and certified instructor Joseph Palmore in his Martial Arts Studio at 2146 Polipoli Road in Keokea. It will include:

  1. Self-Defense techniques that are practical and effective for everyone

  2. The 12 most common assaults

  3. Circuit training Martial Arts style, which includes balance, agility, strength, core work

  4. Handouts that implement discussions to help students recognize and know what to do in challenging and potentially abusive situations


Carpooling from home or Seabury is suggested and the group will have time to plan for appropriate attire,food, and beverages during meetings at school in January.



23. Southern California College Visits (Fresh. & Soph.) -- $2,200

Students selected for this College Trip will be traveling to Southern California to tour a wide range of colleges and universities. We will be visiting two institutions a day where we will take a campus tour, attend information sessions, and meet with admissions representatives. This trip is designed to expose students to a great diversity of schools, therefore the institutions will vary in size, location, mission statement, academic and social offerings, and more. Students will gain valuable insight on how to research colleges, connect with admissions officers, and effectively learn the differences between types of colleges.

The cost includes air and ground transportation, hotels, and time at Disneyland.

Breakfast and lunch will be covered, and spending money for dinner will be distributed each day to students. Students will want to bring extra spending money. Interested students are required to write a one-page response on what they hope to gain from visiting colleges. Responses should be emailed (mkelly@seaburyhall.org) or dropped off to the Upper School Office.

This is an exclusive trip for Freshmen and Sophomores and space is limited.

24. Technical Theater: Lighting and Sound -- $150

This is an on campus program led by two of Mauiʻs most accomplished professionals. It is a terrific opportunity for anyone interested in working with performance and/or entertainment venues and systems, including our own. Peter Della Croce will lead you into a deep dive of all things related to sound design, production and troubleshooting. Amy Lordʻs decades of experience working at the highest levels in television and live staged theater and music productions is a great opportunity for any beginner or advanced technician desiring more knowledge about lighting. You have January to plan for lunch.. Donʻt pass this one up!

25. Trilogy and Eco Tourism -- $765

Join us as we connect you to prominent sustainable companies on Maui and learn how their focus on Eco and Regenerative Tourism benefits their employees, guests, our aina, and our Maui community. Each day, experience a different tour or activity and have the chance to sit down with the Leadership of the company for a behind the scenes look at their sustainability efforts and their values.

Not sure what a career path looks like in Hawaii? You will get to see how these local companies got their start and a variety of on-island career opportunities that offer growth and personal fulfillment. You may learn what it means to be sustainable in hospitality and how to take a personal responsibility to take care of the Island by learning the Mauka-Makai concept and allowing Hawaiian cultural knowledge and concepts to guide your path. Students will also have an opportunity to sail to Lanaʻi as well as do some volunteer-work by removing invasives and planting native species.
