The urban farming elective will focus on learning the many processes of gardening, based on the Goethean Philosophy. Goethean science concerns the natural philosophy (German Naturphilosophie "philosophy of nature") under this we will develop some methods of farming in an experiential and scientific way.
Schedule and Subjects
Day 1 (3 hours) 11 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
1. Introductions
2. Nature Trail.
3. Elements of farming with a focus on soil.
Practical work: Identifying a location. Creating a bed. Making fertilizer
Day 2 (4 hours) 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
1. Elements of farming continued. Building soil. Creating compost
2. Creating an edible landscape
3. Microgreens
4. Goethean Plant Study: Over the course of 3 days, we will observe a plant in various ways and
try to develop new insights through the process.
Day 3 (4 hours) 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
1. Creating a garden in a pot
2. Home Compost
3. Weeds, pests, and other issues
Practical work: Making a homemade, natural spray to repel harmful insects
4. The Goethean Plant Study continued
Day 4 (4 hours) 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
1. Medicinal gardens and pollinator gardens
2. Amrit Jal – Its benefits and usage
3. The Goethean Plant Study concluded
4. Questions, answers, review, and closing circle
