A museum is a connect to the history, a connect to peoples beliefs and a collection of them.
Such a space that preserves such valuables and memories the space as well should have a connect with the people.
The site is in Paithan, which is famous for its paithani sarees.
The process of weaving these, the zari work that is used of gold and silver threads in weaving was quite interesting how a metal is used in a cloth. so I thought of including the process of this paithani making in the museum, instead of just displaying them, one can walk n involve themselves in the process of making the paithanis.
On the site there is the Jayakwadi dam on west and temples on north east n east, so I started drawing in axes which would be open that helps in visual connectivity also the winds are mainly from west and north west so the structure is lower on the west and goes higher on the south east and south so that it does not block visual connections and air flow.
The climate in Paithan is hot and and dry, so keeping this in mind I started jotting down different strategies that would help tackle this. So hierarchy of spaces i.e. closed, open, semi open etc. which can be brought in by corridor verandas courtyards etc. plantations and maybe water bodies that filter light and air and also dehumidify during wetter times. Use of fins and louvers and recessed windows could be done to get adequate light. I thought of Brick as material as it would response well to the climate and the context.
Aim was to build a space where u are constantly in connect to the outside. So I started working with courtyards at different levels to form overlooking spaces, these were the earlier diagrams where I tried to open up spaces to outside and manage the movement of people.
Ground floor plan
First floor plan
Second floor plan
Third floor plan
I thought of keeping public areas on lower floors and cabins n administrative spaces on the higher.
In the is the first floor plan, so one enters from here and there would be a ticket counter and thought the foyer one enters the open space that connected to different spaces through pathways. On the ground floor there's the textile exhibit, machinery space, café and kitchen, store and art preparation room and the multipurpose hall.
From the textile exhibit one goes up to the history exhibition from where using bridges one can go to the exhibit 4 that is the thread dying area from where one goes above to the knitting space.
Also some private spaces like the curators and archivers cabin and archivers work space on second floor..
Last floor has the resource center where all the books and information of the and about the museum could be stored.
South Section
The axonometric shows the whole experience of the space.
All these closed spaces would be connected to outside by pathways with a pergola above it, verandas and adjustable fins.
