SITE
The site is located on the eastern waterfront in Sewri, Mumbai. It is a basalt rock, 7 meters high from the road overlooking the creek and mangroves, with such a different topography there are different species of flora and fauna that reside near this place. This waterfront has many oil refineries and factories situated along the wetlands that pollute the water and air, the flora and fauna here are therefore adversely affected.
ADDITIONAL PROGRAM
The design started looking at the additional program which would negotiate with the environment (physical ,biological, and cultural) flows by answering questions like
what are wetlands?
Why the animals inhabit this place?
What kind of environment is suitable?
How are these interdependent?
The Flora and the Fauna around the site is in threat due to the huge oil refineries and pollution created due to the factories, the architectural program therefore is an ANIMAL REHABILITATION CENTER, A place where wildlife is not compelled to move away from their lands.
DESIGN INTENT
The intent is to make a favorable place for animals, to create the similar environment that they live in, which would be camouflaged with the ground and becomes the extended ground for the animals there.
Achieving different vantage points through the form such that natural flows are not blocked.
To merge the building with the ground itself to make it favorable for the animals.
DESIGN
Climatic conditions are taken in consideration while designing the spaces.
Answering different questions with respect to the site like :
How the built and unbuilt comes together?
How would terrain help in achieving connect with the ground ?
helped to zone out spaces, sections helped in figuring spaces vertically as well as how the built form would merge with the ground.
Massing on the physical model allowed many possibilities :
To reconfigure spaces
To articulate the roof better
To merge the built and unbuilt
The idea of vaulted roofs that meets the ground at one end was used.
In the physical model the form of the structure is seen where the roof meets the ground
The bridge allowed to connect two spaces and also acted as a vantage spot.
Along with the structure, the flow of water was thought as well, reusing it by harvesting the rain water.
Gutters in the plinth with gravel below and grating used for covering.
The water from the vaults flow into the gutters which are connected to each other and finally goes into the filtration tank from where it goes to the storage tank and can be reused.
