WHOSE WATERFRONT?
The city of Mumbai has different kinds of relationships with water. Ranging from ponds, rivers, lakes, to the sea. Each water body produces a discrete lifestyle due to its relationship.
Waterfronts become an important element in the everyday life of the citizens. But, a general trend and understanding of the waterfront in the contemporary times, creates a bias in the design industry, which caters to only a higher class in the society. This relationships are based on leisure and objectifies the waterbody into a mere sightseeing experience or a background. For example, the development of Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad, creates a leisure based waterfront for a middle-high income groups of the city.
Hence to demonstrate the relationships of the city to its waterfront, Darukhana, in Mumbai poses a threat from a similar redevelopment.

The Daarukhana Redevelopment Plan in Byculla, Mumbai, has the potential to have a significant impact on the local community. On one hand, the project could bring in improved infrastructure and facilities, leading to a better business environment and increased economic activity in the area. This could result in job creation and improved livelihoods for the local residents. On the other hand, the redevelopment plan may also lead to displacement of some merchants and residents, and potentially disrupt the existing social fabric of the community.
It is important for the authorities to ensure that the local community's interests are taken into consideration while implementing the project. This may involve providing adequate compensation and rehabilitation measures to those who may be displaced, as well as incorporating their inputs and concerns into the development plan. Furthermore, it is crucial for the authorities to ensure that the cultural and historical significance of the area is preserved and celebrated, rather than being erased by the development process.
In conclusion, the Daarukhana Redevelopment Plan has the potential to bring about positive changes for the local community, but it is important to approach it with a holistic and inclusive approach, taking into consideration the needs and interests of all stakeholders.
