This module focuses on designing in response to climate conditions. My site is Ponda, Goa, which has a warm and humid climate. A brief for Design was a 100 square meter house for a family of four, considering the warm and humid climate of Goa. The house should include a living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining area, WC, and bathroom.

Ponda, Goa is centrally located in the state and is slightly positioned inland. Ponda is surrounded by gently rolling hills and elevated plateaus, and is known for its biodiversity and scenic beauty. These hills are covered with dense forests, plantations, and a mix of tropical and deciduous vegetation. The proximity to the sea plays a vital role in shaping the home's design, with the salty breeze adding a refreshing touch to the air that circulates within.
The homes are designed with a deep understanding of the local climate and harmony with the environment. A typical Goan house features a sloping, tiled roof designed to withstand the heavy monsoon rains. The overhangs provide shade and protect the walls from the sun and rain. Even on the hottest days with the use of large windows and doors it ensures a constant flow of fresh air.The charming bay windows and welcoming porches invite light and air into the living spaces.
The verandah serves as a social space, while the courtyard is the heart of the home, used for family gatherings and religious ceremonies.The design of the house, with its deep verandahs and open courtyards, invites these gatherings, creating spaces where memories are made and cherished.
The weather in Goa is tropical, characterized by hot, humid summers and a monsoon season that brings life-giving rains. Winter in Ponda is a season of comfort, community, and celebration. The mild temperatures and clear skies create an inviting atmosphere, perfect for both relaxation and activity. Homes in Ponda, often designed with thick, laterite walls and deep verandahs, are built to withstand the heat.
As the morning sun shines on the land, it highlights the rolling hills covered with different types of trees. Large mango and banyan trees stand proudly. The gentle slopes suggest a thoughtful design that will work together with the natural flow of the land. The site is more than just a piece of land; it is alive and ready to blend into Ponda's vibrant landscape. The neighboring houses, reflecting the region’s rich architectural traditions, blend seamlessly with their environment.
Stepping inside, the heart of the home reveals itself—a courtyard open to the sky. It is a sanctuary where the elements meet, a place where the warmth of the sun is tempered by the coolness of the shade, where rain nourishes the earth, and where the stack effect quietly works its magic.

in initial stages of our design process.
We began with simple cutouts of furniture at a 1:100 scale to explore different design iterations. As we progressed, we were introduced to passive design strategies that are specific to different climates. For a warm and humid climate like Goa's, strategies such as deep verandahs, large overhangs, cross ventilation, and stack effect are particularly effective.

We incorporated these passive strategies into our design iterations, using climate data that we had gathered earlier. This data informed decisions about building orientation and the placement of fenestrations, which were shaped by factors like wind and solar ingress. Sun path diagrams and sun angles helped us determine the size of overhangs and the type of roof to install. Openings and fenestrations were designed not just for climatic response but also to enhance the comfort of the interior spaces.

जेव्हा मी Bay window तून बाहेर बघतो, तेव्हा बाहेरचं जग माझं स्वतःचं घर आहे असं वाटतं. बाहेर रस्त्यावर चालणारी माणसं, गाड्यांची रहदारी, सूर्याची मंद किरणं आणि वाऱ्याची मंद झुळूक, या सगळ्याला मी अनुभवतो. परंतु खरी जादू खिडकीतून आत बघण्यात आहे. खिडकीच्या कडेला टेकून, निवांतपणे माझ्या घराच्या भिंतींकडे आणि कोपऱ्यांकडे बघताना मला अंगावर एक विचित्र अनुभूती येते. जणू काही मी त्या घराचा एक भाग बनून जातो.
खिडकीच्या कप्यात बसून, थकलेलं शरीर विसावतं, तेव्हा मन एक प्रकारची शांती अनुभवतं. त्या भक्कम दगडी भिंतींमध्ये मी स्वतःला हरवून बसतो. माझ्या घराचं अस्तित्व माझ्यात विलीन होतं. कुटुंबातील प्रत्येक सदस्य माझ्या भिंतींच्या आड सुरक्षित आणि आनंदी आहे. बाहेरच्या जगातून थकून आल्यावर ते माझ्या आश्रयात शांती अनुभवतात.
जेव्हा मी बाहेरून येऊन, बैठकीच्या खिडकीच्या कोपऱ्यात बसून, भिंतीला टेकून मोकळा श्वास घेतो, तेव्हा मला माझं घर जणू माझं दुसरं शरीर वाटतं. घरातील प्रत्येक लहान-मोठी गोष्ट, प्रसंग, हे सगळं माझ्या मनातल्या कोपऱ्यात खोलवर बसलेलं असतं, जणू काही प्रत्येक गोष्ट माझ्या डोळ्यासमोर उभी राहते.
वरांड्यातील लहान चबुतरे, घराच्या सुरक्षा भिंतीसारखे वाटतात. मी त्यावर बसलो की, जणू मीच ती भिंत आहे जी वरांड्यातील प्रत्येक प्रसंग, कुटुंबाच्या दिनचर्येचे रक्षण करते. हे घर माझ्यासाठी एक शरीर आहे, आणि जेव्हा संपूर्ण कुटुंब खिडकीतून एकत्र बसतं, तेव्हा ते शरीर एका जीवासारखं संवाद साधतं.
सकाळच्या पहिल्या किरणांनी पूर्वेकडून येणारा सूर्यप्रकाश खाडी खिडकीतून घरात प्रवेश करतो. पायऱ्यांवरची जागा जरी छोटी असली तरी, सकाळचा चहा आणि वृत्तपत्र घेऊन संपूर्ण कुटुंब त्या पायऱ्यांवर बसतं, आणि त्या पायऱ्यांना एक वेगळी ऊर्जा मिळते. माझ्या दिनचर्येची सुरुवात Bay window तूनच होते.
स्वयंपाक घराच्या वरच्या मोठ्या खिडकीतून येणारा मध्यम सूर्यप्रकाश जेव्हा घरात पसरतो, तेव्हा त्या उंच भिंती, मोठ्या खिडक्या एक नवीन जीवन आणतात. स्वयंपाक घरातील सुगंध कुटुंबातील प्रत्येक सदस्याला आकर्षित करतो, त्यांना एकत्र आणतो.
विटांच्या जाळीतून येणारी थंड हवा वरांड्यात प्रवेश करते, आणि ती हवा जणू वरांड्याला घरात आणते. झोपायच्या खोलीतली Bay window उघडताच, त्या खिडकीत बसून, मी जणू खोली आणि वरांड्याच्या मधली दुवा बनून जातो.

घरामध्ये पहिल पाऊल पडत ते म्हणजे व्हरांड्यामध्ये, नैऋत्य वारे व्हरांडयामध्ये शिरताच मनाला आणि देहाला निवांत करतात. हा वारा आणि जसा आईच्या साडीचा पदर जो भर उन्हात डोक्यावर आला की तन मन चित्त मायेचा गगन आणि सुखाची झुळूक अनुभवतात त्या प्रमाणे व्हरांडयावर पसरलेले mangloor tiles चे व्यापक छत या जागेत नवचैतन्य पसरवून टाकतो.आमच्या घरात व्हरांडा नाही,तर आमचे घरच व्हरांडयामध्ये आहे हे म्हणायला हरकत नाही. व्हरांड्याच्या सीमावरचे लहान लहान बाकडे जे सुरक्षा भिंतीप्र‌माणेला व्हरांड्याला घेरून बसली आहेत, त्यांच्यावर बसून सहकुटुंब मोठी चर्चा करत असू किंवा गावभरच्या निष्फळ गप्पा, नैऋत्य दिशेने येणारा वारा या चर्चामध्ये नियमित भाग घेण्यासाठी समुद्राच्या लाटांप्रमाणे वेगाने हजेरी लावत.
व्हरांड्यामध्ये चटई टाकली आणि हातात भाजी चिरन, धान्यनिवडन किंवा मुलांचा अभ्यास घेण अशी कोणतीही कामे असली की व्हरांडयातील अल्हाददायी वातावरणात घरभर खेळायला आलेले नैऋत्य वाऱ्याच्या साक्षीनेच घडतात. हे नैऋत्यवारे व्हरांडयातील विटांच्या जाळीच्या छोट्या असंख्य छिद्रातून वेगाने घरात शिरतात.हा वारा जाळीतून शिरतांना स्वतःला अनेक जलद धारांमध्ये रुपांतरित करतो आणि घरातील प्रत्येक कोपऱ्यात धावाधाव सुरु करतो. हा वारा घरभर धिंगामस्ती करून थकला, तापला,की मागच्या ईशान्य दिशेतील द्विमजली भिंतीना स्पर्श करत या भिंतीच्या वर मोठ्या खिडक्यांद्‌वारे निरोप घेतो.
हाच वारा अनुभवता येतो जेव्हा मी बैठकीच्या खोलीतील Bay window मध्ये बसतो. कडक दुपारी जिथे बाहेर अंगाची लाही करणार उन्ह पडत तेव्हा मी बैठकीच्या व झोपायच्या खोलीतील Bay window मध्ये आरामशीर पणे बसतो. बा‌हेरची हवा व्हरांडयाद्‌वारे Bay window's मध्ये प्रवेश करतात, जणू व्हरांडाच Bay window's मधून आतमध्ये प्रवेश करतो, तेव्हा अंगावर शहारे येतात.
झोपायच्या खोलीतील पुर्व दिशेने असलेल्या खिडकीतून पहाटेची पहिली सुर्यकिरण माझ्या बिछान्यावर पडते, सकाळच्या वातावरणात माझी झोप त्या अल्हाद आणि कोवळया किरणांनी उघडते. पण जसे जसे वेळ पुढे जातो हे कोवळे उन्ह तपायला चालू होतो, जे मला सरळ खोलीमध्ये नको असते. तेव्हा मी खिडकीला असलेले louvers छताकडे करुण देतो. त्यामुळे छताला धडकून हा परावर्तित प्रकाश खोलीभर पसरतो.
सकाळी संपूर्ण कुटूंब पायऱ्यांवर असलेल्या Bay window जवळ एकत्र येत आणि दिवसाचा पहिला चहा शाणि जगभराच्या घडामोडींनी पूर्व व ईशान्य दिशेला असलेल्या मोठ्या खिडक्यांतून येणाऱ्या कवळया उन्हाच्या सानिध्यात दिनचर्येला सुरुवात होते. या पायऱ्या आणि खिडक्या आमच्या कुटुंबाच्या दिनचर्याचे आणि जिव्हाळा व एकतेचे अविभाज्य घटकच आहेत. वरच्या मजल्यावरचा मोकळ्या जागेत नैऋत्य दिशेला असलेल्या खिडकीतील उभ्या लाकडी फळ्यांच्या फटींमधून परावर्तित होणारा सुर्य प्रकाश आणि वेगवान वारा ,आणि ईशान्य दिशेला असलेल्या मोठ्या उंच खिडक्यांमध्ये असलेली ही जागा एकप्रकारे वरच्या मजल्या व्हरांडाप्र‌माणेच आहे.
स्वयंपाक घराच्या उंच भिंतीमध्ये असलेल्या खिडक्यांमधून उत्तर दिशेकडून येणाऱ्या मध्यम प्रकाशाचे स्वागत होते, हया दिवसभर घरामध्ये हलका प्रकाश पसरवतात. खिडकीमधील Louvers घरामध्ये प्रकाश आणि वाऱ्याच्या खेळाला चालना देतात. मी व माझे कुंटुंब रोज या खेळाचे साक्षी बनतो व त्याचा एक भागच बनुन गेलो आहे.

The final design has openings facing the southwest, where the breeze comes from throughout the year. To welcome this breeze into the house, we placed a verandah in this direction. Large overhangs were used to block the harsh southern sun, while large bay windows were incorporated to allow wind to flow through the house, creating a relaxing space.
In the kitchen area, a double-height space allows for the stack effect, enabling warm air to rise and leave the house. Cross ventilation is implemented throughout the house, particularly in the bedrooms, to enhance airflow. Openings on the northeast side bring in morning light from the east and diffuse daylight from the north throughout the day.
Windows were strategically placed based on climate response and the function of each space, creating a design that is both sustainable and comfortable.
