Mumbai Metro Map
The Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit (MRT) system serving the city of Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region in Maharashtra, India. The rapid transit metro system is designed to reduce traffic congestion in the city and supplement the overcrowded Mumbai Suburban Railway network Line 7 is a 16.5 km (10.3 mi) rapid transit line in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, and part of the Mumbai Metro system and a part of Red Line. While Metro Line 2A is 18.6km elevated line. These stations are coming up in different phases and soon will become and important mode of transport. As Metro lines and stations have been installed, there has been a kind of chaos on various sites and reorganisation of various activities need to be taken account of. In this project we are trying to intervene these intermodal networks for transport and how commuting can be made accessible by organising, restructuring and improvising the existing conditions on site.
Site Location
Aarey Metro Station lies in the suburban part of Mumbai in Goregaon. The area lies in the P/S ward. The metro station has been named as Aarey because of its proximity to the Aarey Colony.
Site Context
The Aarey metro station runs parallel to the Western Express Highway, Goregaon railway line and S.V. road that are connected in north-south direction. The Goregaon-Mulund road intersects with the western expressway and the metro line 7. The well known landmark, Oberoi Mall, is about 1.5km from the Aarey metro station.
Timeline
Western Express Highway area with corporate buildings, bustling traffic, and small shops prominently visible. Heavily road-dependent, limited BEST public transit options nearby.
Satellite imagery shows active construction along the Western Express Highway with heavy machinery and workers engaged in building metro stations and tracks. Traffic disruptions evident through congestion, diversions, and slower movement.
Aarey metro station visibly improving public transit access for dense populations and business centers. Metro has influenced land use, increasing commercial and real estate activity. Enhanced citywide connectivity reduces private vehicle dependency.

Larger Movement Diagram
In the context of Mumbai, vehiculartraffic primarily flows in two directions: north to south and west to east. The Metro Line 2A, Railway Line, SV Road, and Western Highway connect the north to south, while GMLR Road and Aarey Road connect the west to east. During morning hours, traffic is busiest from north to south, while in the evening, it’s busiest from south to north.
Kevin Lynch Survey
The Kevin Lynch survey is a method of understanding and analyzing cities through diagrams. The approach to this diagram is more about how spaces are perceived than thier physicalities on maps. Kevin Lynch has decoded the ways in which we remember spaces, namely, by path of movement, edges (visual or physicall barriers), nodes (active junctions in terms of human occupancy and interaction), district (independent organisations, institutions), landmarks. These five spatial factors have been used to represent a wider area around Aarey Metro station. Herein the Oberoi mall, Virwani estate and Aarey metro itself becomes a landmark. The western express highway and the railway line form the edge i.e. physical and visual barrier . The other offices around are the districts and the roads are the paths for movement.

The idea of issues here majorly state the discomfort in terms of pedestrian navigation. Some issues are visually identifiable while some are hidden under various layers of senses. That feeling of anxiety when one is directly exposed to the highway, the sense of insecurity felt by women in male dominated areas etc are the different range of issues we are looking at.

Aim:
To create a safe public space for commuters travelling to Aarey Metro Station by improvising way-finding and improving easy access to intermodal navigation facilities.
Objectives:
Enhancing way-finding for easy movement of people by introducing appropriate signage.
Ensuring good pedestrian connectivity between different modes of transport available on site.
Strategically modifying widths of footpaths to accommodate larger density of people at peak hours.
Creating safe and lively pause points/waiting spaces by providing street furniture and waiting shelters.
