Narrative Drawing
The drawing delves into the notion of home through the metaphor: ‘Receptacle of Memories’. It narrates the lived experience of the protagonist who spends most of her time in the chawl courtyard and the living room of her house while the above floor is entirely claimed by objects belonging to her loved ones- gardening tools from the time when the couple enjoyed planting on Sundays, worn-out family photographs, her daughter’s school uniform, old books and certificates, etc. She fondly recollected the stories relating to each of these…The entire space was still and hazy except for her daughter’s room which had traces of inhabitation- coffee stains on the table, half-written paper and spectacles lying around, and a faint smell of her favourite perfume. These objects would accrue every time she visited her home. Thus, different surfaces are stitched together to draw out the spatiality of space that is empathetic to one’s past experiences. The meticulous composition of the assemblage of objects and faded walls evoke a sense of aging, archiving, and longing.
