THE TREATY OF GUADALUPE HIDALGO
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, is a treaty that we all should know,
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, it ended the War with Mexico.
First Mexico broke from Spain, then Austin moved to Texas with the families and slaves,
They promised to be loyal and Catholic, hoping Mexico would be democratic.
Soon Santa Anna took control, so Texas declared Independence you know,
At the Alamo, Travis fought to the death, a day Santa Anna would live to regret.
They cried out remember the Alamo, Houston captured Santa Anna don’t you know,
Texas was now it’s own country, they changed the course of history.
In 1844 Clay and Polk ran, to see who would be the President,
Polk said we needed Texas and Oregon, our manifest destiny has begun,
Surprise, Polk won and felt he was right, they annexed Texas and were ready to fight,
He sent Zac Taylor to the Rio Grande, Polk knew this was on disputed land.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, U.S. at War with Mexico,
Attacking from the land and sea, believing it was our destiny.
When shot’s rang out and many died, both countries said ‘it was on our side’,
Polk asked the Congress to declare war, only a few asked ‘what we fighting for?’
Thousands enlisted to lend a hand, some felt it was racism and greed for the land,
Lincoln even asked, ‘please show me the spot, where (were) our soldiers supposedly shot?’
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ceded the lands of Mexico,
Arizona, Utah, Colorado, California, Nevada, New Mexico.
After Vera Cruz the march had begun, to the land of the Aztec sun,
At Chapultepec there was one last stand, the Niños Heroes fought (un)til the end.
The leaders had to meet to end the war, the U.S. had land but they wanted some more,
15 million is what they paid for the land, the border now reaches the Pacific sand.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the U.S. fought with Mexico,
Mexico went down in defeat, manifest destiny was nearly complete, alright.
