Opportunities in Science

BE WiSE engages young women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning experiences in collaboration with the region's research, industry and academic institutions. BE WiSE goals are to:

  • Stimulate young women's interest in STEM through interactions with professionals
  • Increase participants' opportunities and knowledge of STEM fields of study
  • Develop a community of young women (grades 7–12) engaged in science learning through out-of-school activities
  • Sustain interest and involvement through alumnae and ongoing participation for women in science at all levels

BE WiSE invites girls in grades 7 and 8 to Science Overnights to explore their interest in science, hosts events for BE WiSE members in high school to encourage their selection of more courses in science and math, and exposes these girls to adult women scientists who share their knowledge and passion and experiences with science and engineering careers. Learn more about the annual activities for BE WiSE.

BE WiSE selects girls from all across San Diego County and has sustained contact with over five hundred girls over the past 14 years. The first BE WiSE alumnae entered college in June 2003.

Girls must apply for BE WiSE in grades 7 and 8. The application period is January–February of each year. Girls must submit an application with a teacher recommendation and an essay to be considered for the program. Once accepted, they will attend a free science overnight as their first activity then will continue to be invited to various science workshops throughout high school and into college. Learn more about the application process.

The California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science [COSMOS] is a four-week residential (dorm) summer program open to current 8th-12th motivated high school students with demonstrated interest and achievement in math and science. Located on four University of California campuses (Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz), each campus offers different cluster topics and residential experiences. High achieving students from California, as well as out-of-state and international students are invited to apply to this unique summer opportunity. Applications are from January to February. It does cost money, but looks good on college applications, as it is a very rigorous and prestigious summer program.

For the Future (in high school):

YWIB gives girls today the inspiration and support they need to become tomorrow’s leaders in STEM. Through 13 chapters across the U.S. and Canada, YWIB partners with leading companies, universities, hospitals, and other organizations to host engaging, educational, and motivational programs for young girls interested in STEM, provide hands-on experience, and share our passion for all scientific fields. YWIB is part of Women In Bio (WIB), a nonprofit volunteer organization that promotes diversity and inclusion for women in the life sciences and beyond. Young Women In Bio (YWIB) is pleased to announce the launch of its YWIB Ambassador Program, a new initiative for high school girls who are interested in championing and supporting YWIB’s efforts to create educational and leadership opportunities in STEM for young girls, both locally and nationally. YWIB invites high school girls in San Diego County to apply to become a YWIB Ambassador at the San Diego YWIB chapter (1 of 13 across the country). A YWIB Ambassador is a female student leader with a passion for STEM who demonstrates leadership among her peers by promoting STEM within her school, local community, and online. For more information, see the Ambassador Program website.
