Chapter 30, also known as The Montgomery GI Bill® (MGIB-AD) program, provides those eligible for up to 36 months of education benefits. These benefits are payable for ten years following the veteran's release from active duty. These benefits can be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship/ on-the-job training, and correspondence courses. The monthly payment is based on the type of training, the duration of service, and how much/if the Department of Defense (DOD) puts extra money into the veteran's MGIB-AD fund.
In order to be eligible, a veteran must have an honorable discharge, have a high school diploma or GED, or even in some cases 12 hours of college credit, and meet the requirements of one of the following categories:
Category I: After June 30, 1985, upon initial entry into active duty, $1,200 was invested into the MGIB-AD program. The veteran then served continuously for either 3 years or 2 years if that was the initial enlistment duration. Alternatively, if the veteran joined the Selected Reserve within a year of leaving active duty, they served an additional 4 years under the "2 by 4" Program.
Category II: Enlisted in active duty prior to January 1, 1977, served for a minimum of one day between October 19, 1984, and June 30, 1985, and continued active duty until June 30, 1988 (or until June 30, 1987 if the veteran joined the Selected Reserve within one year of departing active duty and served an additional 4 years). On December 31, 1989, the veteran retained entitlement under the Vietnam-Era GI Bill.
Category III: Ineligible for MGIB-AD under Category I or II, the individual was on active duty as of September 30, 1990, and experienced involuntary separation after February 2, 1991. Alternatively, they were involuntarily separated on or after November 30, 1993, or voluntarily separated under either the Voluntary Separation Incentive (VSI) or Special Separation Benefit (SSB) program. Prior to separation, their military pay was reduced by $1,200.
Category IV: While serving on active duty as of October 9, 1996, the individual possessed funds in a VEAP account on that date and opted for MGIB-AD by October 9, 1997. Alternatively, if they entered full-time National Guard duty under Title 32, U.S.C., between July 1, 1985, and November 29, 1989, and selected MGIB-AD between October 9, 1996, and July 8, 1997, they were eligible. Additionally, their military pay was either reduced by $100 monthly for 12 months or they made a lump-sum contribution of $1,200.
Day1Ready is a digital-first, flat-rate course materials program created by the SDSU Bookstore with support from the university. It provides all undergraduate students access to their required course materials before the first day of class for a flat rate of $21.75 per unit.
One of the key benefits of Day1Ready is that students receive their course materials in advance, helping them be prepared from day one. Even if a student chooses to opt out of the program, they will still have access to the materials until the add/drop deadline.
You must opt out of the program by the add/drop deadline or you will be charged for the textbooks.
At the end of each month, you will be required to verify your enrollment with the VA before your monthly benefit can be processed. After verification, it typically takes five to seven calendar days for payment to be issued.
You can verify your enrollment using the following methods:
Text: When you first start using your benefits, the VA will send you a text asking if you'd like to verify your enrollment this way. If you reply "yes," you'll receive a text on the last day of each month prompting you to confirm your enrollment. If you don't respond within seven days, a reminder text will be sent. After 14 days from when the original message was sent, the conversation will close, and you won't be able to verify by text for that month.
If you need to update your phone number, or if you don’t want to verify your enrollment by text anymore, call 888-442-4551. The hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET.
Email: If you opt out of text verification, the VA will send you a monthly email with instructions to verify your enrollment.
Note: If you’re using the STEM Scholarship, you can’t verify your enrollment by email.
Online: You can also verify your enrollment through the VA's online tool Ask VA.
Verify your enrollment through Ask VA.
Ask VA: If you choose to verify through Ask VA, make sure to include your enrollment dates for your school or training program in your message.
Please remember that CRs are processed in the order that they are received. Please submit your CR to Vets Mod as soon as you know your schedule for the upcoming semester. You will need to submit your CR to Vets Mod every semester that you plan on using a benefit.
