Representations of the Civil Rights Movement and Black Lives Matter in Comics
The Civil Rights Movement in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s was a labor to end discrimination and laws based on racial segregation against African Americans. This exhibit explores both the historic and ongoing struggle for African American political rights, social justice and equality as reflected in graphic narrative.
The physical version of this exhibit ran from August 25, 2018 - June 1, 2019 at San Diego State University Library as part of San Diego's One Book, One San Diego programming.
One Book, One San Diego is the San Diego region's premiere literary program, presented in partnership between KPBS and over 80 public libraries, service organizations and educational institutions. Now in its 12th year, the purpose is to bring our community closer together through the shared experience of reading and discussing the same book. Local readers submitted over 500 nominations for consideration in 2018. This year’s chosen title is the first ever graphic novel selected by One Book, One San Diego - March: Book One by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell.
