Create a Resume

A resume is a one-page document that demonstrate your professional qualifications. A resume can be used when applying to jobs or schools as they provide information regarding your experience, education, and skills. Your resume should be tailored to each position you apply to.

NOTE:

  1. When applying to a job or internship make sure to tailor your resume using the job description. If you see that the job description is asking for experience with a certain software or working with tools, make sure to highlight that in your resume.

  2. When applying online make sure to create a pdf of your document before uploading to make sure that your formatting doesn't get messed up.

why tailoring your resume is important

PARTS OF A RESUME

Name & Contact Info

  • Name

  • Phone number

      • Ensure you have a professional voicemail.

  • Email

  • Address

      • Do not include if you are applying out-of-state or far away, otherwise whether you include or not is up to you. You can put your whole address or simply city, state, zip code.

Objective

Make this section short, direct, and easy to read. Decide if an intro or summary would work best for you:

  • Intro- This is where you state what position you are applying to and list what skills you possess that make you a good fit for that position.

Objective:

I am applying to the retail associate position at Jeffrey’s Department Store.

Related Skills:

-Exceptional customer service

-Problem solving

-Teamwork

-Friendly and helpful demeanor

  • Summary- This is where you state what position you are applying to and you summarize your experience in this field and what you bring to the table. This is best if you have experience in this field you want to highlight.

Both of these will have to be edited for every position you are applying to. Make sure you make your resumes as tailored to the job you are applying to as possible.

Experience

Experience does NOT only mean paid work! This can include volunteer work, work done in a family business, or leadership and responsibilities taken on in a club or organization.

Begin with the most recent then go back in time.

Per job/ club position you include:

  • Position title

  • Company Name, City, State OR Organization Name

  • Dates in that position (Month/ Year- Month/ Year)

  • Description and accomplishments

Experience:

-Began with stocking and organizing product.

-Promoted to cashier due to customer service, bilingual abilities, and demonstrated responsibility.

-Awarded volunteer of the month for February, March, and June.

NOTE: You also want to tailor the description part of your Experience section to positions which you are applying.

For example, it may not be necessary to share that part of your volunteer work included creating social media posts to advertise the company online for a retail associate position, but it would be valuable to add that if you are applying for marketing internship.

Education

Include:

  • Name of School, City, State

  • Either HS Diploma or expected graduation date

Other Relevant Information

You also want to include any other relevant information. This can be awards, memberships, hobbies, skills, etc.

For example: If you are applying to a social media assistant position, you may want to include links to the blog and social media fan page you manage. You can also list relevant skills and photo editing software you are familiar with.

If you are applying to an aeronautical engineering internship, inlcude your membership AIAA (an aerospace community) and your MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) awards.

What is a CV?

CV or Curriculum Vitae is a much more detailed document, usually more than one-page as time goes on. This document is not tailored per position but rather encompasses your entire academic and professional career.

Why should I have a CV?

A CV is useful to start now because it will be useful later on. A CV will include all information about previous jobs, extracurriculars, academic and professional achievements. While these may not be necessary in every resume you write (since it should be tailored to the position you are applying to; i.e. no need to include 1st place in a statewide art contest for a cashier job, but yes for a graphic design job) it will stay on your CV which you can reference when creating resumes or filling out applications for jobs or schools. Having one document with all of this information will come in handy as your experince grows and things like supervisor names, position titles, and dates start to blend together.

Cover Letter

A cover letter is an opportunity to go into further detail, highlight, and point out experiences, skills, and qualifications that make you the ideal candidate for the position and the company.

Here is an article explaining how to draft a cover letter.
