Professor Huangfu received her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. Her areas of research expertise include business analytics, public health, machine learning, and data mining. Her research has been published in a list of conference proceedings and journals, including IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Journal of Medical Internet Research, IEEE Signal Processing Letters, Expert Systems, Expert Systems with Applications, Journal of Systems and Software, Pacific Asia Journal of the Association for Information Systems (PAJAIS), Pattern Recognition Letters, etc., with more than 900 citations.
She serves as a reviewer for IEEE Intelligent Systems, Information & Management, Information Systems Frontiers, Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP), etc.
She is a GREW Fellow and received several grants and funding from National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institution of Health (NIH), National Security Agency (NSA), Department of Energy (DOE), etc.
She has served as a review panelist for several NSF programs, and an ad-hoc reviewer for NIH.
Professor Huang received his BEng and PhD degrees both from Chongqing University, Chongqing, P.R.China, in 2010 and 2015 respectively. He was also a visiting PhD student at the department of computer science, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, USA, from 2012 to 2014. He is currently an associate professor at the school of Big Data and Software Engineering, Chongqing University, and also affiliated with the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Dependable Service Computing in Cyber Physical Society. He has authored/coauthored more than 40 scientific papers in venues, such as CVPR, AAAI, TIP, TIFS, TMI and TCSVT. His research interests include computer vision, machine learning, image processing and artificial intelligent applications.
Dr. Ge is an Assistant Project Scientist in Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of California, San Diego. He focuses on the molecular dynamics of protein degradation and ribosome homeostasis. He has published papers in prestigious journals, such as Cell Reports, Nature Neuroscience.
Afnan is an undergraduate student at San Diego State University pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. Her main fields of interests are machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence. Alisa is a Big Data Analytics student at San Diego State University. She joined the AI4Business lab where she works on a project focused on classifying images of pavement distress utilizing Vision-Mamba architecture.
Andrea is an undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at San Diego State University. Her interests include data analytics, machine learning, and web development. She serves as the Vice President of her university's Girls Who Code club, where she is dedicated to helping others, sharing knowledge, and inspiring other students to succeed in the tech field. She is currently working on the Pavement Distress Detection Project at the AI4Business Lab, using machine learning and computer vision techniques to analyze and classify pavement conditions.
Ashmita has a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science from San Diego State University. She is now pursuing a Masters of Science in Computer Science. Her primary interests are machine learning, AI and computer vision. She has worked on several projects, including a research project for predicting the average temperature across the United States using machine learning and a synthetic data generator using Unity 3D, for the purpose of training a machine learning model that would sort objects based on their material. Additionally, she has also worked on projects such as a fullstack phonebook app, a 2D game built using Unity 3D and a few other front end projects.
Aradhya has completed his undergraduate degree in computer science and is currently a graduate student at San Diego State University. He has been working on various projects and one of his research projects on opinion analysis of electric vehicles was published in IRAJ International Research and Journals. Apart from that, he has also done two internships during his undergraduate, one at Codenscious.ai where he was a machine learning intern, and the second at Kirloskar Brothers Limited. He wants to work in the field of research and development, which could help society to improve.
Bobby is an undergraduate student at San Diego State University currently pursuing a double major in Computer Science and Business Management. His interests are machine learning, deep learning models, and data analytics. Recently, Bobby worked as an AI/ML Engineer Intern with the Lockheed Martin AI Consulting Group. Bobby joined the AI4Business Lab in the Fall of 2022, initially working on the financial analysis team on the Russo-Ukrainian War research project, and in Spring 2024, Bobby joined the sentiment analysis team of this project, looking to further expand his skills. In the future, Bobby looks to add value within businesses by leveraging the capabilities of artificial intelligence, and apply his skills through rapid prototyping of novel AI solutions within varied business areas.
With a strong theoretical foundation in media technologies and their impact on societal perceptions, Cassandra aims to bridge her past and current studies to gain data-driven insights into our highly mediated world. She joined the AI4Business Lab in February 2024, where she is currently developing a Question Answering System for medical and environmental applications. Pursuing her master's degree in Big Data Analytics at San Diego State University, Cassandra is acquiring the practical skills necessary to analyze large datasets. She continues advancing her technical proficiency in data processing/visualization, programming languages (Python), large language models, and AI.
Christian is an undergraduate Computer Science student at San Diego State University. Christian’s primary interests include machine learning, data analytics, and computer vision. He built a machine learning system to detect brain tumors in MRI scans and recently developed an AI drone that can avoid obstacles autonomously. Christian hopes that he can use his knowledge in AI and machine learning to make a positive impact on society by using technology to help those that are in need.
Darshan is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems and a minor in Computer Science. His interests are data analytics, cloud computing and corporate social responsibility. Recently, he co-authored a research paper with a team of people titled Data Swagger: A Systemic Approach to Train, Motivate and Engage Data Savvy Employees detailing a theoretical framework of how businesses can train their employees to become more data literate. This paper was published in the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) in 2022.
Devon began attending SDSU in 2020 and graduated in 2022 with a bachelors in ComputerScience with honors as summa cum laude. His interests have evolved over his time pursuing his degree but he is passionate about machine learning, computer vision, deep learning, and autonomous vehicles. He worked on several projects with Dr. Huangfu since 2021 and is co-author of a paper titled Kernel Inversed Pyramidal Resizing Network for Efficient Pavement Distress Recognition. His other work with Dr. Huangfu included a sentiment analysis infused stock prediction model utilizing BERT and Transformer models as its architecture. After graduation, Devon has gained employment as a Machine Learning Engineer working with autonomous vehicles.
Dongqing is a PhD student in Information Systems at UC Irvine. He completed his Master's degree in Information Systems at JHU. His research interests are in the application of large language models and AI Agents in real-world work scenarios. Dongqing is currently the leader of the CodeGPT and LLM groups in AI4Business lab. His paper "An Empirical Analysis of Machine Learning for Fraud Detection in Diverse Financial Scenarios" was published in ICEMGD 2023.
Dylan is a master student at San Diego State University. He aims to use machine learning to help solve some of the world challenging problems. He graduated from Michigan State University. He enjoys applying data science skills to the medical and financial fields. He is currently working on a research project regarding how the war in Ukraine is impacting the predictably of the energy sector of the US stock market and how to identify companies with sustainable business strategies who are likely to be successful in the long term.
Emily is a junior at San Diego State University, majoring in Computer Science. She is gaining her first research experience with the AI4Business Lab, where she explores the application of artificial intelligence in business contexts. Prior to this, Emily held internships at multiple startups and served as the software controls lead for SDSU’s AER team. Through these roles, she developed expertise in software engineering, team leadership, and AI implementation. She is working with Professor Dr. Huangfu and a team to work on the project CodeGPT2 exploring different aspects of machine learning.
Faiz is currently pursuing his master’s degree at San Diego State University. He is an enterprising, enthusiastic, and results-driven business analyst, who enjoys fast-paced and dynamic working environments. His 4+ years of combined experience in change management, leadership, and software development roles has prepared him to continually take on new and more complex challenges with additional responsibilities and interesting problems to solve.
Fengtao is currently a PhD student at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He received the bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Chongqing University (CQU) in 2019 and 2022. His research interests include medical image analysis, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision. He has co-authored a top-tier IJCAI paper named “Boosting multi-Label Image Classification with Complementary Parallel Self-Distillation” with Dr. Huangfu.
August 2022, Himali began the Master of Information Systems program at San Diego State University's Fowler College of Business. She has an Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering bachelor's degree, as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Computing. She has worked in software quality assurance for more than 4.5 years, and has also created automation scripts in Java and Selenium. Additionally, proficient with MS Excel and Confluence for project management. Predictive models, sentiment analysis, and data mining are three topics that she is interested in.
Himani has completed her undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering from Pune University, India. She has work experience of around 3 years as a Software Engineer at Accenture. She has worked in salesforce technology and has experience in the development and quality assurance of cloud applications using the Salesforce CRM platform. She has a certified Salesforce Developer and Salesforce Certified Administrator; this professional experience has not only helped her grow technically but also given her deep insights into sales processes in a business.
Huanhuan has completed her graduate degree in software engineering at Chongqing University. She has been working on various projects and one of her research projects on vehicle matching, which belongs to the field of computer vision. She aims to use machine learning to help solve some of the challenging problems, and wants to work in the field of research and development.
Jia is currently a senior pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at San Diego State University. Her interests include bioinformatics and machine learning application in the fashion industry. She has worked on several projects, ranging from Gene Ontology (GO) annotation correlation research, protein sequence prediction with Variational Autoencoders (VAE), simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) research, and even a couple personal projects that incorporate fashion trends and data analysis. Outside of academia, Jia enjoys trying new cafés, going to concerts, and occasionally plays pickleball.
Jiazhi is a master student and has a bachelor’s degree in Chongqing University, Chongqing, P.R.China. His main interests are image classification, object detection and their application. He pays attention to the usability of deep learning algorithms, and searches for the suitable optimization for current approaches. He is currently working as an intern in a computer vision company and learning the industrial deployment of deep learning methods. He believes the excellent algorithm with the convenient deployment has maximum value.
Kai is a third year computer science student studying computer science at San Diego State University. His interests are in machine learning, LLMs, and software engineering. Kai co-authored a research paper with Dr. Huangfu titled LLM-Driven Document Clustering: Improving Real-time Security Intelligence Extraction and Threat Analysis. The paper introduces a two-step generative clustering approach using LLMs to extract advanced research topics and improve academic literature analysis. The paper earned the Liao-Huangfu "Light-House Second-Stage Golden Award".
Kayla has a San Diego State University bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems and a minor in Computer Science. Her interests are UI/UX, web development, and data analytics. She has been working with Professor Huangfu for two semesters, during which she has utilized Repl.it and Google Colab for Python. In addition, she and Professor Huangfu worked on a project regarding COVID-19 vaccines.
Kaylie is a 3rd year student at San Diego State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Her interests include machine learning, web development, and cloud computing. Her tasks within AI4Business Lab included conducting research specializing in CodeGPT, collaborating with a team to explore various applications, analyzing and classifying scholarly research papers, and contributing to a comprehensive survey paper to synthesize findings and support ongoing research initiatives.
Karina is pursuing a bachelor’s degree at San Diego State University in Management Information Systems with minors in Interdisciplinary Studies and Women’s Studies. Her interests are data analytics, machine learning, and deep learning models. She worked on a project regarding the interpretability of neural networks and researched ways to improve them. Her most recent research project involves distributed object detection of mobile autonomous devices that execute on commodity hardware.

She has interests in data analytics, data mining, programming, and algorithms. Her time at SDSU has given her experience in various programming languages such as SQL, Python, and Java. She joined the AI4Business Lab in Fall 2024 where she worked on detecting cracks in pavement using image classification methods. Likitha has completed her Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Dhanekula Institute of Engineering and Technology affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University. She stood as the top performer throughout the course and secured a Gold Medal with an 8.82 CGPA on a 10 scale. Her inclination towards data analysis began with the fundamentals she learned through C programming, data structures, random variables and stochastic process, and computer networks courses in my bachelor’s degree. She is interested in applying computational and analytical models to address sophisticated real-time problems spread across multiple disciplines. She has worked on various projects and mini-projects related to Health care and Transportation technology. During my internship on “Study of PLC Application in CNC Machines” at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), one of India's largest engineering and manufacturing companies. She realized how linking production PLCs with PC-based data acquisition and analysis helps manufacturing industries to achieve consistency and quality. It was out of her interest to transfigure her ideas and vision into a reality that simulated her to undertake a capstone project “FPGA Implementation of Image Defogging Architecture” which is in the domain of image processing and data analysis. Incorporating vital morphological operations on the data-set of foggy images followed by a well-researched image processing workflow algorithm and advanced computer vision techniques are appreciated by the final presentation panel. The diverse set of programming and hardware description languages along with numeric computing environments like Python, C programming, VHDL, Verilog, and MATLAB were utilized during the development process.
Lokesh is a master student at San Diego State university and believes in the analogy of dream big and learn from failures. He has a strong engineering background followed by 2.5 years of experience at Accenture, Pune, India as software engineer. He has worked with java technology, and worked on cloud applications, end to end application migration, network and connection, user centric incident solving. He has also worked with RDBMS for fetching out business required data and performing data analysis using SQL. Moreover, Keen in learning cloud architecture and he is AWS solution architect certified. Megan is an undergraduate student at San Diego State University, majoring in Computer Science and minoring in both Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Studies. Her interests include data analytics, large language models, and machine learning techniques. She is currently working in the IT Network and Infrastructure department at SDSU as a student assistant, where she helps maintain the campus’ wired and wireless network. She also had the opportunity to study abroad in Japan during Summer 2024 and enjoyed learning about Japanese language and culture. She started working on the CodeGPT Project at the AI4Business Lab in Spring 2025 and is excited to continue working in the lab in Fall 2025.
Megha is a student researcher with a strong interest in Artificial Intelligence and its application in biomedical information retrieval. Her current work focuses on the development and review of advanced Question Answering (QA) systems for the biomedical domain, emphasizing the integration of Natural Language Processing (NLP), BERT models, and Knowledge Graphs. She is contributing to a research project titled "A Review of Question Answering Systems for Biomedical Information Retrieval," which explores the evolution of QA systems and their potential to support healthcare professionals and researchers through accurate and accessible medical information. Outside of her academic pursuits, Megha enjoys hiking, playing badminton, and watching movies and series. She draws inspiration from the natural beauty of places like Yosemite and Alaska and has a deep appreciation for Indian vegetarian cuisine. Megha brings a unique combination of technical insight and creative enthusiasm to her work and collaborations.
Nitin is a third-year Computer Science major at San Diego State University with a strong passion for the intersection of technology, education, and artificial intelligence. He is currently a Research Assistant at the AI4Business Research Lab, where he is actively contributing to the CodeGPT team. Nitin's role focuses on exploring and advancing the use of generative AI for improved problem-solving and critical thinking in computer science fields.

Outside of academia, Nitin is also an indoor cycling instructor at DOSE Fitness and SDSU, where he enjoys leading spin classes and motivating others.
Patrick has a San Diego State University bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems and a minor in Computer Science. His interests are data mining, sentiment analysis, and deep learning models. He worked on several projects. Some of the tasks which he was involved with include sentiment analysis, convolutional and recurrent neural networks, and gathering large data sets. Most recently, he and Dr. Huangfu co-authored a paper titled CURVE4COVID: Comprehensive Understanding via Representative Variable Exploration for COVID-19. The paper seeks to uncover the human and non-human factors that may lead to the increase of the rate of COVID-19 infection. This paper was published in Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) 2021 and won an award for being in the top 25% of papers accepted.
Pooja is a Master's student at San Diego State University, majoring in Computer Science. Her interest lies in Data Science and Machine Learning, and have a strong background in data analysis. Wen is a master student at Chongqing University. His interests are computer vision, intelligent transportation systems, and image processing. He and Dr. Huangfu have co-authored several papers in the field of intelligent transportation, published in IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems and Electronics Letters. Most recently, he and Dr. Huangfu co-authored a paper titled PicT: A Slim Weakly Supervised Vision Transformer for Pavement Distress Classification. The paper is the first to apply the visual Transformer to the field of pavement distress classification, which substantially improves the efficiency and performance of disease classification. This paper has been accepted by ACM Multimedia (ACMMM) 2022.
Yi received the B.S. degree from Chongqing Normal University, China, in 2016. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree with the School of Big Data and Software Engineering, Chongqing University. His research interests include pattern recognition, image processing, and few-shot learning.
Zeyu is a master student at the School of Big Data and Software in Chongqing University. She has researched the issue of graphic API recommendation with Professor Huangfu in the field of software engineering and has published papers at international conferences. The recommendation algorithms proposed in these papers help users save time and improve work efficiency.

Ethan received his bachelor’s from Boston University in Management Information Systems and Finance. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Big Data Analytics at San Diego State University. He had worked previously as a Data Scientist, applying various machine learning techniques within the domains of finance and business. Such examples of professional projects include credit assessment models, mixed data-type clustering for customer segmentation, and no-code business intelligence workflow optimization. Apart from his professional endeavors, he also has taken an interest in multivariate time series analysis and natural language processing of LLMs (Large-Language Models). He is working with Professor Huangfu, on a project aimed to enhance the hallucination detection accuracy within prompted responses of LLMs.
Grace is a senior at San Diego State University pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. She has a diverse background, including roles as a technical service representative, a software engineering intern, and experience in quality assurance and sales for a startup. Currently, she serves as a teaching assistant for the Intro to Artificial Intelligence course. She is currently contributing to the sentiment analysis of the Russia-Ukraine war project using Python. Mohsin is a Computational Data Science Master's candidate at San Diego State University, undertaking a thesis in Generative AI and Textual Analysis. His academic foundation includes a thesis-based undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Information Technology. He has over 1.5 years of ML and software development experience from Telaeris, USA, and Rupeek, Bangalore, and have enriched his research skills through 2 years of internship experiences at AIISC and Wipro AI Labs. His work during these internships contributed to publications in AAAI and EMNLP, showcasing his dedication to advancing AI research. Yao is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the School of Big Data and Software Engineering, Chongqing University, China. Her research interests include recommendation systems and deep learning.
Yue is currently studying software engineering at the School of Big Data and Software at Chongqing University. Her interests are data mining, sentiment analysis, and deep learning models. She works on a project relevant to Russia-Ukraine war. In this project, she employed VADER to do sentiment analysis and used BERTopic to do some topic modelling. And she has written a paper and going to submit it.
