Emotional Support (ES) is about teaching children the emotional skills they need to succeed in the classroom setting. For a variety of reasons, some children may may lack a certain skill set such as coping skills, anger management skills, social skills, and/or friendship making skills to help them succeed in school. The Emotional Support Department spends time explicitly teaching children the skills that they need to improve so they can cope in the regular education setting. Some of the topic taught throughout the year are:
- Reciprocal conversation skills
- Identifying feelings
- Perspective taking
- Problem solving
- Anger management
- Coping skills/Stress Management
- Friendship-building skills
- ADHD symptom management
- Personal space
The Emotional Support Room also provides a safe place for students to go if they are having a difficult day, need a quiet place to work, or if they just just need a short break in their day to recharge.
