Reading Tips for Parents
- Encourage your student to read at least 30 minutes each night and discuss the reading together. Discussion ensures there is no "pretend reading" happening.
- Read together--Students enjoy special one-on-one reading time with their parents.
- Keep a variety of independent leveled reading materials around for your student to explore (chapter books, magazines, non-fiction books, and poetry).
- Read yourself. When students see their parents read, they are inspired to read themselves and understand that reading is an essential skill for life, not just for school.
- Take frequent trips to the public library. It's free!
- Explore different literary genres to keep things interesting.
- Build a word wall in your home consisting of words taken from your student's reading material.
- Celebrate achievements, no matter how small. Let your student know you're proud.
