Bio
I am currently the department head for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at South Dakota Mines. I received a B.S. in Mathematics, B.S. in Anthropology in 1985 and Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Utah in 1993. After Utah I worked at the University of Nevada Reno in their Mathematics Department and in 1998 joined the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. In 2021, I assumed the position of department head for the newly formed Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department.
Research
My research interests are in AI (evolutionary algorithms, machine learning, particle and swarm methods), Scientific Computing (numerical methods for reaction-diffusion equations, parallel computing, hybrid methods for nonlinear systems) and Robotics (autonomy, simultaneous localization and mapping, computer vision).
Prospective Graduate students
I am currently the EECS Department Head and am not taking on students or running any research groups. All questions about EE graduate work should be directed to Dr. Zhao and questions about CS graduate work should be directed to Dr. Karlsson.
