Phonological Awareness
What is Phonological Awareness?
the ability to recognize and manipulate the spoken parts of sentences and words.
Students who are strong in phonological awareness can:
recognize and create rhyme and alliteration in spoken words
blend, segment, and manipulate sounds in spoken words

Phonics
What is Phonics?
Phonics is defined as the study of the relationships between sounds and words; this includes alphabetic principle, decoding, orthographic knowledge, encoding, and fluency.
the ability to match sounds to letters of the alphabet or groups of letters, an understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds
Students who are strong in phonics can use phonics rules and patterns to decode and encode words
