Math Interventions for Teachers
Intervention Strategies
Number Sense
What is Number Sense?
a person's ability to understand, relate, and connect numbers
Students who are strong in Number Sense can:
Counting both forward and backward
Name each number they count and realize that there are sets of numbers inside (ie. 7 is made up of 1 and 6, 2 and 5, & 3 and 4)
Solve problems in their head
Relate numbers to real-world problems (ie, One student has 4 apples and another student picked 2 more. How many apples all together?)

Problem Solving
What is Problem Solving?
the ability to define a mathematical problem; determine the cause of the problem; identify, prioritize, and select alternatives for a solution
Students who are strong in problem-solving can:
Read the problem
Paraphrase the problem
Draw the problem
Create a plan to solve the problem
Predict/estimate the answer
Compute the answer
Check the answer
