Mrs. Shaw's Bio

Mrs. Kate Shaw serves as the Newberry Middle School eighth-grade science teacher. Mrs. Shaw grew up in Orangeburg, SC, and attended Edisto High School. During her youth, she was active in the 4-H and FFA where she received top honors from both organizations. She was also a two-time National Paso Fino Horse Association Champion and was selected twice to represent the United State at the Paso Fino Youth World Cup in Puerto Rico.

After high school, she attended Clemson University, receiving a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Agriculture Education. This is also where she met her husband and made to decision to move to beautiful Newberry County. She is currently continuing her education at Clemson University as she pursues a Doctor in Philosophy.

Before joining Newberry Middle School, she worked for Clemson University for 16 years. During her first 12 years, she served as the 4-H and Youth Development Agent in Laurens County. Then she served her last four as a 4-H Specialist in which she planned and conduct statewide programs such as the 4-H horse project, SC 4-H Horsemanship Camp, SC 4-H Congress, SC 4-H Junior Weekend, SC 4-H Senior Weekend, and 4-H Legislative Day. While at Clemson, Mrs. Shaw coached youth to win over fifteen national titles for the South Carolina 4-H program. Mrs. Shaw also served in many leadership roles including president of the SC 4-H Agent Association and Epsilon Sigma Phi. In 2020, she was selected and served as a member of the second cohort of the Extension Emerging Leadership Initiative (EELI) program. In 2017, Mrs. Shaw received the Alumni Award for Cooperative Extension Distinguished Public Service from Clemson University.

Mrs. Shaw lives on her family farm in Newberry County raising meat goats, horses, pigs, and beef cattle. Mrs. Shaw and her husband, Mrs. Jimmie Lee Shaw, are active members of the community. They both have served as past SC Farm Bureau State Young Farmer & Rancher State Committee Members. Together Mrs. Shaw and her husband were awarded the SC Farm Bureau Young Farmer & Rancher 2009 Excellence in Agriculture Award and 2016 Achievement in Agriculture Award. In 2015, Mrs. Shaw also won the SC Farm Bureau Discussion Meet Contest. Thanks to her two daughters, she also serves on the SC Meat Goat Project Committee. She is a member of the St. James Lutheran Church serving as co-leader of the youth group and a Sunday school teacher.
