The College introduced Journalism as a course in 1986. Since then it has got the recognition in the media world because of the quality education which it is providing. Alumni of this department are working in various media houses of the state as well as the national fame. S.D.M journalism department is considered as one of the oldest in its kind in Coastal Karnataka.

SDM Multimedia Studio introduced in the year 2007, to educate students in Electronic Media Production. This studio encouraging the pupils to come up with various studio productions like producing weekly TV news bulletin, Documentary, Special segments, Short Films, Promo, Interview and Vine Videos.
SDM Multimedia Studio produces educational videos like 'SDM E-Lecture series' and 'SDM E-Practical series' which has free access to all enthusiastic learners through-out the globe. Along with this it has the credit of recording ‘Golden Lecture Series’ – which has the discourses of 100 eminent scholars of the Karnataka State.
