6/15: Introduction to devices

During our first session, we will receive an introduction to the class. You will see the website, and learn how to access materials. We will also give a brief introduction on the various types of devices, some of which we will be using this summer. And we will do a short, get to know you activity on the iPads.

Registration

We will begin with registration. You can get to the SDCE registration by going to: https://cestudent.sdccd.edu/cereg/. Make sure and answer questions 18, 19 and 21. Here is a link to the instructions handed out in class. You must complete registration for all 3 classes (June, July-August and Online). When you are done, offer to help someone else.

Activity: Human Bingo

Description of activity: This activity will use your iPad (or your smartphone, or your computer, or your device) to get to know your classmates. It is a bingo activity, only it involves people (us) instead of numbers. NOTE: Just like in real Bingo, the boxes are different on each device!!!

How it works:

· You can work independently or with a partner

· Each version will have the questions in a different order (they are randomized)

· You may only ask 1 question before moving to the next person.

· If you find a match, just tap on the box and it will turn a color

· We are looking for the 1^st Bingo, then 4 corners, then T and finally filled board

Some of the things you should do this week:

• If you weren't in class, go through the presentation above for some tips.
• Look for your invitation to the Google Group discussion. If you didn't receive one, send me an email and I will resend. It may work better with a Gmail account. Click here for a tutorial on setting up a Gmail account.
• Review the website. Read about the options for connecting with us (discussion board, zoom, twitter). We are a technology class, so consider delving inito one of these technologies!

• What do you know about cyber threats and your smartphone? This special report by US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) provides us with lots of information and ideas on a safer online experience.
• Also from US-CERT, how to dispose of your electronic devices safely. Read this before tossing that old tablet or laptop.
• Video tutorial: Are you brand new to computers, and really need to start at the beginning? This is a great 90 minute tutorial by a librarian. You don't have to watch it in one sitting. Watch it in segments. It covers everything! Take a look.
• GCF Learn Free tutorial: We will have many links to this great learning website, GCFLearnFree. In this one, you can receive some mini lessons on technology which will be mentioned in class. Click here to view tutorial, and then click on each of the lessons. You can learn quite a bit from this tutorial!
• Amazon Echo: I love Alexa! She is the voice behind Amazon Echo. Want to see Alexa in action? This cute video describes 12 commands you might want to try. Not sure whether you should get Alexa or Google Home? This video compares the 2. Very enlightening! Still reading? Well, take a humor break and watch this video on "Amazon Echo Silver". Sure to give you a chuckle.
• Internet of Things: There are lots of resources which explain the Internet of Things (IoT), offering advice in purchasing, information about security and more. Here is a great graphic which describes IoT. For a more complete look, check this robust resource, which I used for some of my research. If you want to learn more about smart fridges, view this eye opening article. Make sure and read about the potentially deadly outcome of a refrigerator hacking.
• Smart home: Is your home dumb? This futuristic type video shows us what is already out there. Pretty amazing. Are you interested in making your home smarter? Here are the best smart home gadgets of 2017, according to an online rating magazine, Tom's Guide. Even better, you can watch an 8 minute video which talks us through all of those smart home gadgets. A highly recommended video!
