Summer 2018
Summer edition
We are really excited about this summer's version of Communicating with Technology. We will be offering two classes this summer:
This summer we go hands on as we try out some technology related projects and activities. Class will include an instructional component, and then a project which uses the technology which is featured. Each class is stand alone, and no class requires any special technology knowledge. When the summer is over, you will have completed a number of activities and will have a better understanding on how technology has affected our communicating.
Class meets: Mondays, 3:30 - 5:30, Scripps Ranch Library (10301 Scripps Lake Dr, San Diego, CA 92131), June 11 - August 13
This will be the first summer to focus entirely on the devices. After an introductory week, we will focus on a different device every two weeks (with an extra week thrown in for Android). The topics are: iPad/iPhone, Android devices, Windows 10 PCs and Mac Safari laptops. It is understood that most people will not need to take each of the four topics. Bring your own charged device to class.
Class meets: Fridays, 1:00 - 3:00, Serra Mesa Library (9005 Aero Dr, San Diego, CA 92123), June 15 - August 17
There is an online component for each class. This will contain additional information besides what was done in class. For those who are online only, it is best to go through the lesson, looking at the handouts and materials. Then go to the online part and view the readings and activities that are most important to you. Use the Discussion Board for questions, and the Zoom classroom to check in.
Notice that we have a discussion board this semester. This will be a place where you can post questions or comments about what we are learning, or about technology in general. All students will be invited; you decide whether to accept the invitation. It works best with a Gmail account, so if you are having trouble, I suggest you create a free Gmail account. Here is a short tutorial on setting up a Gmail account. Go to the discussion board page to join in the discussion. (You won't see it until you have joined!)
Zoom is a way to stay in touch without leaving your home. (Yes, you can Zoom in your pajamas with a cup of coffee if you like!). We will be holding an optional Zoom meeting on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 - 10:30. The 9:30 - 10:00 slot is for the Projects class, and the 10 - 10:30 slot is for Devices. You are welcome to attend either or both of the sessions. See the Zoom page for login instructions.
