Protocol n° 22/0287

Brasilia, 27 August 2022

For the attention of

PROVINCIALS

SALESIAN CONFRERES

the world over

INVITATION TO THE CANONISATION OF SALESIAN BROTHER ARTEMIDES ZATTI

Dear confreres,

My fraternal and affectionate greetings and my best wishes to each of you in the name of the Lord.

I am writing this letter from Brasilia where I am accompanying the Provincial, confreres, Salesian Family and young people in celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the St John Bosco Province of Belo Horizonte (Brazil).

As the heading indicates, the purpose of this letter is to invite Provincials and confreres from the provinces to the canonisation of our Salesian brother Artemides Zatti.

The Consistory, which the Holy Father presided over today, 27August 2022, has determined that the canonisation will take place on Sunday 9 October 2022 in Rome.

The Holy Father Pope Francis has also granted us the great gift of a private audience on the eve of the canonisation, Saturday 8 October at 12 noon, open to all members of the Congregation and the Salesian Family. We have also been granted the possibility of celebrating the Eucharist on the morning of 8 October at 10.00 o’clock.

With the joy of this news, dear brothers and sisters, I offer some information for a better involvement in the canonisation event:

· All confreres from all the provinces of the world who, in dialogue with their respective provincials, wish to participate are invited to come to Rome.

· Brother confreres of all ages who intend to come are invited by the Rector Major and his Council. The Rector Major and the General Council will bear all the expenses for board and lodging, from the day of arrival until the day of departure on return to their respective provinces.

The canonisation of Artemides Zatti will be a great feast for all of us Salesians, but especially for our coadjutor brothers.

· The Rector Major has asked all members of the General Council to be present on this important day.

The invitation is extended to all provincials of the 91 provinces and vice-provinces of the Congregation. I ask all provincials to make the effort to be present to represent their province, along with some other confreres.

· The Rector Major also invites Salesian Bishops, Archbishops and Cardinals who wish to participate. It will certainly be a great day for the whole Church, for the particular Churches and for the Salesian Congregation.

· All participants at the canonisation must arrive in Rome by 7 October 2022 and return to their headquarters at the end of the event, i.e. on the evening of Sunday 9 October 2022, or on the morning of Monday 10 October 2022.

Those who wish can certainly stay longer in Rome. However, for any extended stay, everyone will have to make their own arrangements.

· Salesian Brothers are also invited to continue their pilgrimage to visit the Salesian holy places at Valdocco-Chieri and Colle, from 10 October (journey to Valdocco) until the morning of 14 October 2022.

· On 13 October, at the end of the pilgrimage, in Turin-Valdocco, the Rector Major will preside at a Eucharist of thanksgiving for the gift of holiness of Artemides Zatti.

· The whole Congregation and the Salesian Family are invited to celebrate a Eucharist of thanksgiving on the same day and in every part of the Salesian world, in communion with the one we will celebrate in Valdocco.

· A group of Salesian confreres has been working for weeks to ensure reception, accommodation and travel to Rome, providing suitable accommodation for all participants.

· The Economer General, Brother Jean Paul Muller, and the General Economer's Office team are up to the task and will be attentive to those who may need special help with travel.

· Finally, to register and also to respond to requests regarding practical details (accommodation etc.), a website has been set up at the following link: www.sanzatti.org

For any practical detail enquiries, please contact our confrere Fr Jesús Jurado at his e-mail address: jjurado@sdb.org.

Dear confreres, following on from this very important invitation containing early information, we will send you the precise calendar, times and programme of the various days.

With this urgent letter (which could not be sent before because the decision of the Consistory of Cardinals with the Pope had not been held), I intend to ask you to urgently activate all the decisions that you must take in each province in order to guarantee participation in the event and to give adequate notice in the individual local situations.

With true affection, united in the Lord and in gratitude for the gift of this canonisation,

I am sincerely yours,

Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, sdb

Rector Major
