This website is intended as a guide to the Care Meeting process which is being piloted in the School District of Ashland . Beginning in May, we will begin a review to gather feedback about how the process is working for students, teachers, administrators and families.

When to use Care Meetings

Collaborative problem-solving can be used to address a variety of social, academic, behavioral and wellness challenges that we encounter with our students. The purpose of outlining this process is to provide a quick and simple way that can be used at the first sign of a challenge, as well as a more in-depth strategy (School Care- ALSUP & Plan B) that can be used to durably solve recurring issues. As individuals become familiar and comfortable with the process, many will find that these meetings become the go-to strategy for quick, problems solving conversations with all students.

What's different about this approach?

  1. This approach is based on the philosophy that "Kids do well if they can." If our students are not doing well, our role is to help them build the skills and solve the problems that are standing in their way. Addressing challenges collaboratively with our students helps them develop those skills.
  2. The process actively seeks and engages student voice.
  3. This process focuses on collaboratively and proactively solving problems with students. It provides and additional set of tools that does not rely on rewards and consequences.
  4. Using this process will help our students develop Social and Emotional competency.

Why are we rolling out this approach?

  1. We have heard from families, students, teachers, staff and administrators that our current systems are not working for all students.
  2. To articulate a clear problem solving process that is consistent from 4K-12.
  3. Best practices are continually evolving, and this model incorporates the most up-to date thinking.

Overview

Please note that the process outlined here is not necessarily intended to be followed in a linear fashion in all cases. For example, there may be students, especially at this point in the year, who are already in the process of receiving intensive interventions including Special Education assessments, etc. Each student and situation will be considered on a case by case basis and addressed accordingly.

We encourage you to try the universal and select strategies outlined below with all students, including those students who are currently receiving intensive supports.
