8th Grade is on an AB schedule 

Class Syllabus and Topics: 

Fabrics and Textiles; Students research the different materials clothes are made from and will identify those that are synthetic vs. non-synthetic. 

Essential Question: Why is it important for people to know what materials their clothes are made out of?

Objective: Identify different fibers and fabrics and share their uses. 

Laundry Care; Demonstrate how to separate clothes, identify different washing cycles and detergents. 

Essential Question: Why are care labels important to maintaining the quality of our clothes? 

Objective: Demonstrate proper procedures for caring for clothes and different fabrics through the use of proper washing and drying techniques, washing cycles, and laundry detergent.  

Hand Sewing; Practice sewing on a button by hand and stitches that can repair clothes. 

Essential Question: What is the difference between a running stitch and a zigzag stitch and what is the proper use for each? 

Objective: Practice hand sewing a button without showing thread and leaving the button to lose. 

Project: Letter Pillow

Career Exploration; Compare and contrast different career paths 

Essential Question: Why do we explore career paths in middle school and why is it important not to wait until high school? 

Objective: Compare and contrast a variety of career paths based on students interests.  

Financial Literacy; Writing checks, reconciling a checking account, and putting together a monthly budget.  

Essential Question:  How do I manage money by preparing a personal spending plan and what are identifying ways to decrease spending and increase income?

Objective: Applying personal finance decisions to real world scenarios.
