Morning emergency call-ins can begin at 6:30 a.m. It is important to be awake and have your phone nearby. Emergency call-ins can occur right up until the first bell and even throughout the day. When you are called, an administrative assistant or an administrator will let you know what position they are looking to fill and for how long.
Once you say 'yes' to a call-in, you cannot switch to cover for another school if another school calls. If you are open to switching, administrators will make the arrangements and will contact you to confirm.
There will be times when schools are booking TTOC/TOCs in advance. An administrative assistant or administrator will call you and let you know who the coverage is for (the class(es)) and for how long (it might be for one day or multiple days). If you accept, please ensure you mark this in your calendar. You cannot accept other call-ins for those times. It is recommended you keep a calendar to record the days you have been scheduled to work or have been called in to work.
You will be given a timesheet for the month you are working. At the end of each day you will be responsible for getting your timesheet signed at the office by an administrator. You will need to submit your timesheet to the School Board Office according to the schedule located on the back of the timesheet.
Keep a photocopy of your timesheet for your records.
You may print a timesheet from this link or pick one up at the end of the day from the administrative assistant.
You will want to arrive to the school approximately twenty minutes before classes begin. This time will allow you to check in at the front office, collect the room key, review the day plans, and get answers to any questions that might arise.
During this time, you will also want to check with the front office to see if you will be responsible for any supervision duties such as lunchtime supervision, bus duty, outside supervision etc. If you have questions about what supervision entails or the location, this will be a good time to clarify with the front office.
At times, you will need to make photocopies for activities before class begins so arriving before the start of class will ensure a smooth, and organized start to your day with the students.
If it is your first time in the school or within a particular classroom, you will want to leave yourself time to become familiar with specific routines such as washroom breaks, hall passes and seating plans.
Please note that lunch breaks vary between the schools, and may not allot enough time to leave the building for lunch.
